Actor Amanda Peet Launches New Video Message for Mothers Day in Times Square Celebrating the Milestones of Childhood

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

As people across the country prepare to celebrate Mothers Day this weekend, the United Nations Foundations Shot@Life campaign debuted a new public service announcement on the Toshiba Vision screen in Times Square today to raise awareness about the value of vaccines to protect children in developing countries from preventable diseases. Top influential online moms decided to mark Mothers Day with this important message.

Mother and actor Amanda Peet, along with Dr. Jacob Kumaresen, Executive Director of the World Health Organization office at the UN; unveiled the PSA with a signature 10, 9, 8 Times Square countdown during a launch event at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel.

Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease, but those deaths can be prevented with access to vaccines that cost just a few dollars. We hope this PSA inspires the millions of people who travel through Times Square to take action and join the campaign, said Devi Thomas, Director of Shot@Life. We are thankful to Toshiba for providing its world-famous Toshiba Vision screen to help amplify the discussion about vaccines and the role we all play in helping to create a safer and healthier world.

As a mother and an Every Child by Two Vaccine Ambassador to the Shot@Life campaign, Amanda Peet has been a passionate advocate of vaccines for children for years. Its proven- vaccines are life-saving. I cant imagine my daughters not reaching major milestones because of a preventable disease like pneumonia, diarrhea, measles or polio. No mother should have to imagine that, said Peet. We know vaccines work and for only $ 20, we can help protect a child from these four diseases. All children should have the opportunity to lead healthy lives and experience all of lifes priceless moments.

The Shot@Life campaign, which launched nationally last month, in Atlanta, GA aims to raise awareness and funding in the U.S. to ensure that children in developing countries have access to life-saving vaccines. We have the ability to prevent 1.5 million deaths each year simply by getting vaccines to the children that need them. This Mothers Day, lets give those 1 million mothers the gift of watching their children grow up and lead healthy lives, said Thomas.

The PSA will air in the crossroads of New York City through June 2012. To view the PSA or to learn more about Shot@Life visit ShotAtLife.org.

New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer Condemns Nurses Caught on Video Engaging in Sex Acts with Elderly Patient

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 14, 2012

Two male nurses were paid a rate of $ 1300 a day to take care of a 98-year-old female stroke victim in her home. Despite the pay, the patient’s family suspected she was not being cared for properly. The family viewed video from security cameras in the room and what they saw was the two male nurses repeatedly performing sexual acts with and beside the victim, reported CBS News. Said New York civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman, hundreds of elder abuse cases in New York and elsewhere are missed each year. This family recognized and took seriously the signs of elder abuse. They watched the video to see what was going on when they werent around and were able to stop the abuse.

Elder abuse is often difficult to expose. The reason in-home caregivers are hired is to provide relief to busy family members and friends who have a hard time visiting with an aging individual on an every day basis. It is often difficult for family members to learn about the actual quality of care provided because an incorrect impression can too easily be given, said Perecman.

In the video posted by CBS News, the two nurses can be seen in the patients bedroom fondling each other. At times they touch her while engaging in sexual behavior.

Elder abuse is as deplorable as child abuse. Like children, many elderly individuals, for reasons such as illness, are to some extent dependent on others and helpless to protect themselves, said Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New Yorks civil rights violation law firms. Families and friends of the elderly must remain vigilant to ensure vulnerable loved ones are not mistreated.

According to a New York State data on elder abuse, 19,301 cases of elder abuse were referred to Adult Protective Services (APS) in 2008. APS is the primary recipient of elder abuse reports in New York State. Factoring in the 5:1 underreporting ratio from a 1998 National Center on Elder Abuse study resulted in an estimated incidence of elder abuse in NYS of 33,875.

Criminal charges against the nurses, Russel Torralba and Alfredo Ruiz, are being considered, reported CBS News.

Victims of elder abuse and/or their families should contact The Perecman Firm at 212-977-7033.

Video Shows Kidpower Story of Empowering Kids To Stop Bullying, Abuse and Violence

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 05, 2012

The One Million Safer Kids Video from acclaimed personal safety education nonprofit, Kidpower, was released today to broadcast its mission to create a safer world, one child at a time. The new video shows how Kidpower makes it fun for kids to learn how to be safe from bullying, abuse and violence.

The goal for the One Million Safer Kids initiative is simple: to make one million children safer from bullying, abuse and violence by finding innovative new ways to share Kidpowers personal safety and awareness skills training.

Weve wanted to make a One Million Safer Kids video from the start of the initiative, says Kidpower founder and executive director, Irene van der Zande. Our experience is that kids learn best when they can practice skills in a safe and fun setting and this video is a powerful way to share how we make that happen.

Kidpower launched its One Million Safer Kids initiative last year with the goal to reach one million more kids in five years or less. One year later, more than 200,000 young people have already been helped and van der Zande hopes to use the video to reach worldwide to help parents, teachers and children get access to Kidpowers often life-saving personal safety skills.

This new video offers an inspiring view into what really makes Kidpower so engaging and effective for kids and adults alike, says Eileen DiFranco, a Kidpower Board Member and Advisor. It is also the centerpiece of our end-of-year Season of Safety campaign. During the month of December we will be asking Kidpower supporters to share personal stories about how Kidpower skills have made their lives safer and more fun.

I hope the story of how Kidpower got started, and seeing kids have fun practicing the safety skills in our new video will inspire people to help us reach even further and faster to share Kidpower with all of the kids in their lives, in their communities, and around the world, says van der Zande.

“We had a blast working with Kidpower! says Cara Jones, the video producer and founder of Storytellers For Good. We’re so inspired by how Irene and her team are transforming young lives and empowering kids everywhere to stay safe.”

Kidpower was founded in 1989 by van der Zande after she protected a group of children, including her own, from a man threatening to kidnap one of them. Since then, Kidpower has helped more than two million young people learn to protect themselves from bullying and abuse, and build healthy relationships. Van der Zande aims to boost that number rapidly through the One Million Safer Kids initiative.

A world with One Million Safer Kids is a better world for all of us. says van der Zande. It is a world with more joyful playgrounds, classrooms, and neighborhoods. It is a world with more relationships strengthened by strong boundary setting skills. Its a world with less trauma and injury. It is a world where children (and parents) feel safer because they are empowered. The potential ripple effect of One Million Safer Kids is both staggering and achievable.

About Kidpower

Kidpower’s expertise in child safety has been featured by USA Today, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal and its programs are widely recommended worldwide for taking a positive, skills-based approach to preventing abuse, kidnapping, bullying and other violence. Kidpower workshops, K-12 safety curriculum, books, videos, the Kidpower.org free online library and other services have helped to protect more than 2 million young people from abuse, bullying and other violence since 1989. Irene van der Zande, Kidpower’s founder and executive director is the author of the
