Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota in collaboration with the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) today completed three days of training in Responsible Working Conditions in Istanbul, Turkey. AIAG is a non-profit, member-driven organization that works with a wide range of manufacturing companies and service providers to help them operate at peak performance.
The AIAG-hosted training is designed, sponsored and funded by the automakers to help their suppliers meet local regulations and customer expectations for acceptable environmental and working conditions. It is a supplement to corporate responsibility commitments the automakers already have in place.
The training, developed in collaboration with North American and European automakers, is part of AIAGs comprehensive corporate responsibility initiative and is modeled after programs the North American OEMs Chrysler, Ford, GM, and Honda successfully launched with AIAG in China, and later in Mexico with the addition of Toyota. To-date, there have been more than 900 participants and information has been cascaded to more than 13,500 suppliers.
AIAG is known for working collaboratively with the automotive industry to improve product quality and eliminate waste, said J. Scot Sharland, executive director of AIAG. Now, were finding that the same team-directed approach, proven methodologies and commitment to continuous improvement can be applied to environmental strategies, ethics training and human resource management. The goal of this training is to help ensure that all suppliers share a common understanding and commitment to responsible business practices that protect both the environment and our employees.
Local rules, customer expectations and the fundamental principles of responsible working conditions will all be addressed in the training, as well as specific areas such as child labor, forced labor, freedom of association, harassment and discrimination, health and safety, wages and benefits and working hours. Programs in India and Brazil are in development. All of the participating automakers have demonstrated full commitment to the enhancement of working conditions in the global automotive supply chain.
Ford believes the auto supply industry should demonstrate respect for the people who produce parts for vehicles, no matter where they live, said Tony Brown, Group Vice President, Global Purchasing, Ford Motor Company. We started our training program in 2003. We believe it is essential to share our learnings with AIAG and the other members of AIAG since we use much of the same supply base. Its important that we build on our experience, not only to avoid duplicating efforts, but also to advance the agenda of working conditions as rapidly as possibly.
In addition to the working conditions training, automotive manufacturers are also working at AIAG on other initiatives under the umbrella of corporate responsibility with the support of Program Manager Jenifer Chambers Young of the Go Green Campaign. The organization hosts a web site http://cr.aiag.org providing a repository of tools and best practices related to social and environmental programs including greenhouse gas reporting, end-of-life vehicle, International Materials Data System (IMDS), Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals (REACH), and health, safety and environment.
AIAG was founded in 1982 by General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corp. to develop and share best practices to create a leaner, more efficient supply base. Since then, AIAG has grown and evolved to address increasingly complex global supply chain, manufacturing and quality issues, and now has tools and processes that can help diverse industries improve their performance, by protecting and enhancing corporate reputations, rooting out waste and inefficiency, uncovering cost savings and improving quality.
AIAGs Corporate Responsibility Web site (http://cr.aiag.org) is publicly accessible and was developed as a global resource containing important information for manufacturers and their supply base including tools for self-assessments, planning templates to facilitate cascading of the message, education and training for lower tier suppliers and direct links to other Corporate Responsibility programs.

In partnership with national Green Jobs training provider CleanEdison, Casper College is offering a new training program for Wyoming contractors and novices looking to enter the Green economy. Program administrators at Casper College are thrilled to announce this tremendous opportunity for Wyoming residents to be introduced to new skills and training in these promising new sectors. Being able to get someone training they need to be more successful as an employee or business owner is really what makes this all worthwhile. said Sarah Olson, Workforce Training Specialist at Casper College.
Following the successful Geothermal training conducted last March, Casper College is now offering Deconstruction & Materials Re-Use training in combination with Lead Renovator (Lead RRP) training. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) now requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices. Firms that fail to comply with EPAs new Lead RRP training rule may face civil fines up to $ 32,500 per offense and an additional criminal fine of $ 32,500 plus imprisonment for knowing and willful violations.
This new training is available to all Wyoming citizens regardless of income, residency, or employment stat State Energy Sector Partnership grant awarded to Casper College from the Department of Labor as part of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Whereas these in-demand certifications normally cost anywhere from $ 800 to $ 3,500, this grant allows contractors to receive the same national certifications for $ 75 for the Lead RRP or $ 100 for the Deconstruction course, which also includes OSHA certification.

In honor of Mothers Day, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys (LLS) Team In Training (TNT) asked Honored Teammate Mom, Melissa Jabonero, to share her familys journey with LLS, TNT and their fight against blood cancer.
Melissas four-year-old daughter, Isabella, Izzy Faith, was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) in June of 2010 and is currently undergoing treatment.
Izzy and her family have been such a source of inspiration for the TNT triathlon teams and community in general, says Heather Pace of LLS. We thought it would be helpful for other Moms to hear Melissas words of wisdom.
Melissa shared that like thousands of people, she heard about the program through the grape vine. Then, in June of last year, Melissa watched her husband complete his first triathlon with TNT in Maui and ever since then TNT has been a Jabonero family tradition.
Fighting a disease threatening to take the life of your child requires action, says Melissa. LLS and TNT have given us a way to fight back and they have been fantastic to us throughout our journey.
Melissa says she finds her strength to get through the various phases of her familys cancer journey in different places. Her friends, family, faith and TNT teammates have provided a support system that keeps her going. She also says that resources like LLSs patient services have been invaluable in their fight.
LLS has been amongst the top of our helpful resources, explains Melissa. When our daughter was first diagnosed, it was an emotional roller coaster that no one can prepare for. Without any questions, LLS even provided us with some money which was used towards our daughters treatment.
In situations like the Jabonero familys, it can be hard to find the right words to say. But Melissa offers the following words of advice for other mothers facing a similar health crisis in their family:
You may not be able to control the outcome but you can definitely control your outlook. Hope and faith are two powerful things. Also, never be afraid to ask for help. From laundry to a listening ear, people will always be willing and eager to help, she says. Take time out for yourself. It can get hectic, taking time to decompress with something as simple as a walk can do wonders. Last but not least, be the over opinionated, hand-holding, protective parent your child needs you to be. You know your child best and only you can be the voice for them.

About Team In Training
Team In Training (TNT) San Francisco chapter offers marathon training, half-marathon training, and triathlon training. Individuals can also train for cycling events and adventure hikes. TNT began in 1988, when Bruce Cleland of Rye, NY formed a team that raised funds and trained to run the New York City Marathon in honor of Cleland’s daughter Georgia, a leukemia survivor.
The team of 38 runners raised $ 322,000 for LLS’s Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter. Because of the pioneering efforts of Cleland and the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter, Team In Training was born and has grown into the world’s largest endurance sports training program. Cleland was honored by Runner’s World magazine in 2004 as one of their “Heroes of Running” for his role in establishing TNT.
Whether participants choose The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s traditional Team In Training program or TNT Flex, a flexible, customized online training option developed by TNT’s renowned coaches, they get all the support they need to cross the finish line at the marathon, half marathon, triathlon, century ride and hike adventure of their choice. Both offer a choice of world-class events, travel arrangements to an exciting destination, and a fabulous, activity-filled weekend once they’re there.
