Zirconia, NC (PRWEB) February 8, 2009
One of the nation’s leading providers of educational opportunities for special-needs students is launching a series of interactive online seminars to help parents navigate the murky waters of Internet social networking sites.
The first of these online webinars, “Facebook, My Space, My Child, Oh My,” is set for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants per session, and registration is already underway.
The webinar series is sponsored by Talisman Programs, which provides summer camp and semester-length programs for young people (ages 8 to 21) who have learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, and high-functioning autism.
According to Aaron McGinley, who is leading Talisman’s online outreach effort, the Internet forums will explain how social networking sites work, and will provide parents with insights into the risks and benefits of popular sites such as Facebook and MySpace. They will also allow parents to ask questions and discuss issues related to raising special-needs children in an increasingly networked world.
“A lot of parents have been calling us with two questions about their kids and the Internet,” McGinley said. “They want to know how they can keep their kids safe online, and they also want to learn how to make online social networking a positive experience for their children. These webinars will help answer both of those questions.”
MAXIMIZING SAFETY, MINIMIZING RISKS
For many young people with ADHD, Asperger’s, and related conditions, social networking sites can present both a world of possibilities and a range of potential problems. The Talisman webinars, McGinley said, are designed to help parents maximize the potential of the online world while minimizing the risks that their children may encounter there.
“A lot of our students struggle with skills such as reading social cues and interpreting nonverbal body language, so it’s natural for them to be attracted to some of these online social networking sites,” McGinley said. “It can be a bit easier for them to communicate online, and also it’s a big part of mainstream youth culture. It’s something that almost every kid is doing these days.”
But the enticements and opportunities that are offered by the online world are accompanied by many of the same challenges that special-needs children face in many of their daily interactions. “Our kids typically have trouble understanding social rules,” McGinley said. “Well, there are a separate set of social rules on the Internet, and failing to understand them can lead to some serious problems.”
For example, McGinley noted, children who are prone to taking risks and making poor choices about who they associate with offline are apt to behave in a similar fashion online. But because users are often unable to control or remove images or information once they have uploaded it, the consequences of posting an embarrassing photo or sending an inappropriate message can be exponentially worse than making a social mistake in a real-world environment.
ABOUT THE WEBINARS
The first Talisman webinar will focus on the following five topics:

This spring, Henley-Putnam University will continue its exclusive webinar series with Insider’s Guide to the Counterintelligence Community, led by Colonel Michael Angley, former U.S. Air Force Special Agent and Senior Military Advisor to Henley-Putnam University.
Insider’s Guide to the Counterintelligence Community will take place Wednesday, March 31, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM PST. Those interested should register here: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/533883986. The webinar is open to the public and completely free of charge.
During the free webinar, Colonel Angley will provide a broad overview of the field of counterintelligence (CI), an often misunderstood and mysterious subset of both the intelligence and law enforcement communities. He will discuss the formal definition of CI as it appears in current Executive Orders, as well as break it down into more simplistic and practical terms. He will also discuss the differences between defensive and offensive approaches to CI, the major agencies that have a CI mission, and the limitations the U.S. government places on the conduct of CI activities.
“Counterintelligence tends to be an esoteric, gray realm of the intelligence and law enforcement communities, and as such, is typically misperceived,” said Colonel Angley. “I hope this webinar will demystify much of the misperception and serve to encourage people to consider a career in CI.”
The series, launched in 2009, was designed to bring the hands-on, insider experience of Henley-Putnam faculty members – comprised of former members of the CIA, Secret Service, FBI, and intelligence and federal law enforcement community – to those seeking careers in Strategic Security. The Lakota Peoples Law Project is working to return children to their communities by developing Native services and reforming the Indian Child Welfare Act.
According to NPR Laura Sullivan is known for her investigative reporting on the plight of the countrys most disadvantaged people. NPR also lists Ms. Sullivan’s 2007 revelation of the widespread rape of Native American women on their reservations, committed largely by non-Native men. This tragic story took place, and continues to take place, on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in the Dakotas.
The Lakota Peoples Law Project (LPLP) has documented the theft and destruction of Indian children. Native children are being taken at an alarming rate. LPLP investigators and attorneys have found that the South Dakota Department of Social Services in a misguided attempt to help the children removes them from their families and places them in non-Indian households, foster-care settings, and state institutions for years. These children often experience sexual and emotional abuse, medical over-drugging, and inadequate education. According to LPLP lead attorney Daniel P. Sheehan, the current system is a failure. Mr. Sheehan’s research shows that South Dakota, is one of the worst offenders nationwide. Nearly two-thirds of children in state foster care in South Dakota are Native American. By age twenty, over 60% of these children are dead, homeless, or in prison.
Since 2005 The Lakota Peoples Law Project has been partnering with the Native American tribes of South Dakota. Through law, public policy, research, and education The Lakota Peoples Law Project is challenging the systemic injustices of the last 150 years and working for the renewal of Lakota culture and society
The Lakota Peoples Law Project is sponsored by the nonprofit Romero Institute of Santa Cruz, CA. The Romero Institute, named after slain human rights advocate, Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, seeks to identify and disassemble structural sources of injustice and threats to the survival of our human family.

Weed Wars has brought the working world of medical marijuana into Americas living rooms, allowing viewers to witness how the issues they hear about in news sound bites present themselves in real life and affect real people. Tonights final episode of the four-part mini-series about Harborside Health Center, the nations premier holistic health center and medical marijuana dispensary, will air on Discovery Channel tonight at 10 pm in most areas.
The finale centers on Deep Green, an event that unites Earth Day, which inspires awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment every April 22, with 4/20, the April 20 counterculture holiday historically focused on cannabis consumption, to produce a day that inspires awareness and appreciation of ecological and holistic human health.
Deep Green was created by Harborside director Steve DeAngelo and Earthdance / Green Institute founder Michael Gosney. Deep Green is another of DeAngelos efforts to enlighten the world about the benefits of marijuana. The event reflects the philosophy behind Harborside, the gold standard for medical marijuana dispensaries. Beyond establishing standards and following regulations, the model dispensary operates as a service-oriented holistic health center that also provides natural medications that work, according to DeAngelo.
In addition to Deep Green, tonights episode will show the Oakland cannabis club serving a senior patient, Larry, his first dose of cannabis. Larry comes to California from out of state to learn if cannabis can relieve his debilitating pain. His journey turns into a quest for more than the answer to his physical pain.
Patients like Larry are the inspiration for the medical-social justice movement that Harborside and others across the country have helped create in order to address the issue of escalating healthcare costs (both physical and financial) in an aging population. The movement is an ongoing conversation as people come to grips with their health care choices, and the population grows older and has more limited options.
The Weed Wars series has sparked great interest and debate. As the feds have moved to crack down on the businesses that enable patients to get their medication safely and in a professional manner, Harborside is working hard to change negative public perceptions about the medical marijuana industry.
Harborside is optimistic that Weed Wars is increasing appreciation of health benefits of marijuana as a safe alternative to highly addictive and increasingly fatal opiates like Oxycodone. The show allows the general public to see cannabis as a wellness drug that enhances the lives of patients as a component of holistic medicine and health.
Public concern for the patients on the show, especially for a small child, has been tremendous. In Episode 2, a young father whose son, Jayden, has been diagnosed with Dravets Syndromea rare and debilitating form of epilepsy that begins in infancyfound through expert recommendations and research that medicinal cannabis can be an effective treatment for controlling the dangerous seizures caused by the debilitating disorder.
Jaydens father reports that since his son took that first dosage of cannabis-based medication in front of the camera earlier this year, Jayden is having 70% fewer seizures, the duration has decreased in length from what was hours to only 2-15 minutes, and he has even gone five consecutive days without a seizure.
He is listening and following directions better than before starting cannabis therapy. He no longer deals with severe side effects, which included disturbing visual hallucinations, chronic constipation, sleep deprivation, and intense periods of pain lasting 10-12 hours, during which he would cry.
Jayden is much happier, according to his dad. He could only last in the swimming pool for a handful of minutes in the past, but now he now plays for hours and the amount of time he can last in a bounce house has increased from 2-5 minutes to an hour.
Episode 3 also touched Americas heart as a conservative paraplegic muscular dystrophy patient of faith who never imagined she would use an illegal drug like cannabis came to Harborside to receive cannabis as an alternative medication to alleviate the unbearable pain that her prescription drugs were not able to reduce to a reasonable level.
Discovery has tentatively planned the following broadcasts and reruns of Weed Wars. Check local listings for local broadcast dates and times.
