It is an all too common story: innocent children finding themselves in compromising situations and parents not having the proper tools to face these challenges. Celebrity mom, Britney Spears is often criticized for her parental techniques. And though no-one can totally protect their children from every emotional upset, accident or illness, preventative measures can be taken to minimize the kids’ suffering, nonetheless. The award-winning series Real Moms, Real Stories, Real Savvy offers parents insightful solutions in this weeks’ episode with a segment entitled, “How to Keep Kids Healthy” and investigate the “Effects of Divorce on Families” in an upcoming episode.
“Divorce is supposed to be the second worst trauma to a child – second only to the death of a parent”. States Dr Laurie Zelinger, Child Psychologist. This may well be a trauma Britney’s children have to face. LA County Department of Children and Family Services was called to Spears’ house twice recently in a two week period. Although, a stalker was thought to make the calls, it did send an alert to soon-to-be ex-husband Kevin Federline. “Kevin is prepared to go the distance in order to do what he feels is necessary to protect and safeguard the children and will not be intimidated or dissuaded from pursuit of those goals,” said Michael Sands, spokesman for Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan.
How to Keep Kids Healthy provides tips and advice on how to help parents take care of their kids’ health and prevent the spreading of germs. Dr. Lillian M. Beard, featured expert and Pediatrician, says there are many things that parents can do in order to keep their kids happy and healthy. Starting with Breastfeeding, keeping newborns away from colds, washing hands for at least 20 seconds and limiting direct contact when older siblings have sniffles and sneezes are all steps towards keeping children healthy.
Real Moms is bridging the gap between the experts’ knowledge and caring for young children in the hope of minimizing the factors that make children suffer unnecessarily.
“Real Moms, Real Stories, Real Savvy” airs Nationally on PBS affiliate stations (check local listings) and in New York on WLIW, Channel 21: Fridays at 2:30 pm EST and Saturdays at 7:00AM EST.

Real Kids Photography announced today that they are launching a new website and offering a free report via an E-book titled, The 6 Essential Tips Everyone Should Know When Photographing Children. The E-book is written by Real Kids, LLC owner and life-long child photographer, Betty A. Muscott.
“We recognize that many parents are not satisfied with the traditional posed studio portraits,” said Ms. Muscott. “Instead, more and more parents want to learn about photographing their own children. With today’s digital cameras parents can take hundreds of photos of their children and simply choose to keep and print the ones they want.”
The free E-book can be obtained by visiting Real Kids Photography and clicking on the appropriate box.
John White, spokesman for Real Kids Photography, notes that “Within minutes parents will have all the information they need to educate themselves on how to improve their photography skills and get the natural expressions they want for quality photos of their children.” Totally free, the only thing necessary to receive the E-book is to complete a simple form and press the “Send it Now!” button. Once the request has been confirmed download of the book is immediately available.
“This free E-book provides valuable lessons learned over the years” said Ms. Muscott, who has been taking children’s photographs for many years. The oldest of five children growing up on a dairy farm in Michigan, Ms. Muscott earned money babysitting in order to purchase the first thing she ever really wanted in life – a camera. At that very moment, a young aspiring photographer was born. Ms. Muscott has taken thousands of children’s photographs since then and has learned something new with each one. Her free E-book will assist parents in doing the same.
Twenty first century technology and digital photography have given Ms. Muscott new avenues to create, educate and share the art of photographing children. Both the free E-book and child photography blog available on the new website are just a couple of those new avenues. Also available is a bi-weekly email feature that will provide photography tips to help increase parent’s ability to make better pictures of their children.
“This free E-book will assist people in making quality photographs of their children now, so they can enjoy them in the future,” said Ms. Muscott. “Learning how to photograph children is an excellent way to preserve generations of fond memories and family history, and this makes for a great deal of joy.”
The new website offers, in addition to the free E-book, information on ways for parents to share, protect and display photos of their kids. Also included is information about free photo contests, ways to use these precious photographs to create personalized gifts, and tips on finding the right digital camera equipment for parents to use in photographing their children.
Ms. Muscott also recommends an excellent digital photography course which can be previewed with a free demonstration of the digital interactive photography course. Mr. White notes that this new website “is a one-stop shopping venue on how to photograph children.”
In business since 2005, Real Kids Photography is located in “The Cozy Forest” at 4234 Driftwood Drive, DeWitt, Michigan. To receive the free E-book and learn more about the services Real Kids Photography offers call toll-free 1-866-440-2461or visit their website at Real Kids Photography.

Major League Soccers (MLS) Real Salt Lake and the United Nations Foundations Nothing But Nets campaign are teaming up to raise awareness about malaria. As the winner of last years MLS Cup, the club will meet with President Obama on Friday, June 4. The club will host a workshop to engage D.C.-area children in the global fight against malariaa preventable and treatable disease that continues to kill nearly 1 million people each year.
Winning the MLS Cup was an incredible victory; we look forward to saying the same about malaria in 5 years, said Real Salt Lake defender Robbie Russell. To know that a child dies every 30 seconds from a preventable disease is hard to understand, but its easy to help. Were excited to be part of building the movement to end malaria.
MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccers community outreach initiative, has been connecting its teams, players, and fans to send nets and save lives through Nothing But Nets since 2007. Since 2006, hundreds of thousands of supporters have helped Nothing But Nets raise more than $ 30 million to send more than 3 million life-saving bed nets to Africa.
As part of a country-wide bus tour to spread the buzz about saving lives by ending malaria, the Nothing But Nets Buzz Tour is working with MLS teams across the country to host in-stadium events to raise awareness about malaria in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup, which will be played in Africa for the first timewhere 90 percent of malaria deaths occur.
Long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets are one of the easiest and most cost-effective methods of preventing the spread of the disease. The nets create a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of malaria transmissions occur. One bed net can protect a family of four, and lasts three to five years. A net costs just $ 10 to purchase, deliver, and educate the recipient on its proper use.
About Nothing But Nets
Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Inspired by sports columnist Rick Reilly, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the campaign that was created by the United Nations Foundation in 2006. Founding campaign partners include the National Basketball Associations NBA Cares, The people of The United Methodist Church, and Sports Illustrated. It only costs $ 10 to provide an insecticide-treated bed net that can prevent this deadly disease. Visit http://www.NothingButNets.net to send a net and save a life.

On Saturday, April 24, Debtmerica, LLC teamed up with the Orangewood Childrens Foundation to help foster children learn to manage their personal finances with an all-day event set in a fictional Independent City.
Volunteers helped construct and operate Independent City, which simulated some of the day-to-day challenges faced by adults in modern American society. Orangewoods foster teens were able to learn valuable lessons about paying for housing, child care, groceries, and utilities at various stations in the exhibit, which was held in Irvine, Californias Pretend City Childrens Museum.
In a letter thanking Debtmerica volunteers after the event, Orangewood volunteer services program manager Kristi Piatkowski – who had previously lauded the assistance of Debtmerica volunteers for their assistance at another event last year – said that the youth learned about money management through their workshops, and added that the volunteers were wonderful in making sure that the day was educational and fun!
Piatkowski also noted that without Debtmericas support, both financial and in-kind, the event would not have happened.
Harry Langenberg, one of the Managing Partners of Debtmerica, spoke on behalf of his team, we are very proud to be part of Orangewoods mission. Debtmerica is a big proponent of giving back to the Community where it can, and Orangewoods programs enable our entire staff to get involved and contribute to a wonderful cause.
The Orangewood Childrens Foundations goal is to help eliminate the neglect and abuse of children in Orange County, California. The foundation works to accomplish this on four main fronts: Strengthening families to prevent abuse from occurring in the first place, protecting children from abusive homes from physical and emotional violence, emancipating teens from abusive families, and promoting enhanced public awareness of the challenges faced by children raised in such damaging environments. This last goal has been the area in which important partners like Debtmerica have been able to do the most good for the foundations kids.
Debtmerica is a financial services company that provides assistance to families who are experiencing financial difficulties and hardship. Headquartered in Orange County, CA, Debtmerica focuses on negotiated debt settlement, a powerful debt relief option which helps clients get debt free and remain so. By actually reducing debt balances over the course of the program and providing an affordable monthly payment, consumers can experience lasting benefit to their financial well-being. Debtmerica was recently named one of the Best Places to Work in Orange County, CA, where it also was awarded for being the third Fastest Growing Company in 2009.

Silicon Valley estate planning and probate lawyer Janet Brewer has released a new guide, “Buying U.S. Real Estate When Your Child Studies In America.” The free 14 page guide is available at calprobate.com/NRA.
If you are a non-citizen putting a title in your name, it makes sense to have a qualified advisor help you avoid tax traps, says Brewer. Otherwise, if something were to happen, you would only be entitled to a $ 60,000 exemption from U.S. gift and estate taxes. Non-resident aliens (NRAs) pay a much higher rate of gift and estate taxes than U.S. citizens. The good news is that with a smart investment in good counsel, you can protect both your loved ones and your assets.
Real-World Examples Illustrate Key International Estate Planning Issues
Brewer gives examples of nonresident aliens from several countries to illustrate key questions, issues and choices such families often face. The examples are made up, she explains, but if your situation is anything like those in my examples, you need the help of an experienced international estate planning attorney.
Example #1: The Sasakis Learn the Risks of Online Legal Forms: If something happened to Emiko and Dai Sasaki of Tokyo, their son Hiro, a student at Stanford, could face a tax bill of $ 143,000. Learn how Dai hires an attorney and creates a tax-saving plan.
Example #2: The Francos Coordinate Estate Planning Between Countries: Genevieve Franco of Paris studies at USF and lives in the Francos’ second home in Burlingame. Learn why the Francos urgently need an attorney’s help to coordinate estate planning between the U.S. and France.
Example #3: The Laus Benefit From Proper Healthcare Authorizations: Kim Lau of Hong Kong, a student at California University of Management and Technology, gets injured one day. Learn which documents on file authorize his doctors to share health information with his parents.
Example #4: The Patels Fire Their Prepaid Legal Plan: The Patels of Bangalore, whose daughter Kali is entering Menlo College, try a prepaid legal plan for international estate planning. Learn why they soon switch to working with a highly regarded attorney instead.
Example #5: The Vogels Pass On Both Values and Valuables: Peter Vogel of Frankfurt owns a Pacific Heights home. Learn how he structures his estate plan to express his values to his daughter Iris, who is entering law school at Hastings, and to future grandchildren.
Trend: More NRAs Purchasing in College Areas
The United States has long been a desirable place to own property. A recent survey by the National Association of Realtors as part of its 2011 Profile of International Home Buying Activity found that the number of foreign exchange students at U.S. colleges and universities has increased the demand for real estate by foreign buyers. Many foreign families purchase U.S. properties in college areas so their child has a place to live and to take advantage of what appears to be a buyers market.
Why Putting Off Estate Planning Is Especially Risky for NRAs
Some people consider it bad luck to discuss death, acknowledges Brewer. But its important to set aside our emotions and consider a key fact: Federal estate and gift tax laws impose onerous restrictions on non-citizens – even if you have a green card. Consider:
Outright gifts during your lifetime to a non-U.S. citizen spouse including making him or her joint owner of certain assets can trigger gift tax problems immediately.
A non-resident non-citizen with no green card who bought a $ 1.5 million house with cash, intending to leave it to one of his children through a will or trust could trigger an estate tax of $ 495,000. With advice from the right expert, she could avoid that tax bill.
Likewise, gifts at death to a non-citizen spouse may not qualify for the unlimited marital deduction. Your unsuspecting widow or widower may be forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in estate taxes shortly after your death.
If an investor buys a $ 1.5 million property in U.S. and dies owning it without ever having put it in a trust, the probate cost alone could be as much as $ 28,000. If that investor also happens to be a non-resident alien, the estate taxes could be $ 495,000.
The takeaway: Even if your estate is modest, the tax effects of poor planning on NRAs can be devastating.
Series of Guides Cover a Range of Perspectives
The guide released today is one in a series of estate planning and asset protection guides offered by Brewer at calprobate.com/resources:
Choosing Your Bay Area Estate Planning Attorney: 6 Point Checklist, 4 Examples, 15 FAQs, Typical Fees, and More (June 2011)
U.S. Gift Tax and Estate Tax Planning for Non-Residents and Non-Citizens (Feb 2011)
Year End Tax Law Update for Bay Area Families (2010)
Tax Law Update for San Francisco Bay Area CPAs Serving High Net Worth Clients (2010)
How to Choose Your Trustee in California (2010)
Brewer also publishes each week at the California Probate, Trusts, and Estate Law Blog and posts tips and links on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Those on Brewer’s mailing list get the earliest notice about new resources when they come available.
Examining Your Options Now
In my 20+ years as an estate planning attorney, I’ve found that most families and perhaps especially nonresident aliens (NRAs) want straight talk when it comes to legal and financial matters, Brewer says. Too many parents of children studying in America fly in the dark when it comes to securing their loved ones financial future. I have heard so many heart breaking stories of families having to pay dearly during painful times because they lacked an adequate estate plan. My team and I can set up documentation, write any complex agreements, and take other steps to help protect families. But only you can take the very first step: examining your options now.
About the Law Offices of Janet L. Brewer
If you’re like most people, you don’t want to think about what might happen to your loved ones after you’re gone — or to you if you were to become disabled. But for lasting peace of mind, effective estate planning is a necessity. It involves asking, What is truly important to me? Who should care for my minor children? How much money is “enough” to leave to my family? What should be my financial legacy?
We help guide you in addressing these issues, with legal services for wills, trusts & estates. We specialize in:
International estate planning for non resident aliens
Probate services for those in the Silicon Valley area
Asset protection for Bay Area families
California estate planning
Fiduciary counseling and estate administration
Ensure you get a responsive, straight-forward approach to estate planning from an experienced estate planning professional. Janet Brewer is a Palo Alto probate, trusts, and estate planning attorney with an advanced degree in tax law. She has practiced California estate planning, advanced gift-planning, and California probate law exclusively since 1991, and is Certified as a Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.

When, at the age of twelve, Bria disappears, Jack and his Aunt Mary search for her, and when she surfaces, injured, abused and traumatized, he fights to become her guardian with no idea of the trials ahead of him. By then, Bria is thirteen going on thirty, full of her own ideas on how her life should run and with some very fixed notions about who is in charge.

Lynda was born in Dunfirmline, Scotland in 1953, emigrated to Canada with her parents as a young girl. She grew up on the vast prairies of Western Canada, and loved the open wide spaces of that wild land. She was educated in Medicine Hat, Alberta, a town in the southeast corner of that province, and spent most of her time riding horses, barrel racing and hanging around rodeos and cowboys http://www.lyndammartin.com/page1.
In 1968, the product of a troubled youth and a dysfunctional family, she found herself on her own at the age of fifteen, two thousand miles from her home, and knows first hand the dangers facing girls on our streets and the predators that prey on them. She was one of the lucky ones. She survived.
Later in life, she went east to Montreal for her education, graduating from the University of Montreal with a degree in Business Administration, which provided a fine income, but little in the way of personal satisfaction. Still in her twenties, she became a volunteer with social services to work with troubled teen-aged girls, and took every course the social agencies offered.
Soon, she became an outreach worker who worked with police, social agencies and charities, becoming a respected front-line worker, often initiating first contact with recovered abused and exploited children. Over the years, and in many different jurisdictions, this second career became the driving force of her life, which often took her into law-enforcement, child welfare agencies, prosecutors offices and the courts.
Lynda and her husband Jim make their home in the sunny state of Florida, and in her beloved Alberta. She has two daughters and four grandchildren.
Now retired from child protection work, Lynda is a full-time writer, editor, writing teacher and coach http://lyndammartin.blogspot.com/.
