According to Arizona’s Office of Oral Health, Common Parenting Practice Could Endanger Kids’ Teeth

Glendale, AZ (PRWEB) February 7, 2008

Anyone who has experienced parenthood knows how a well-timed sippy cup of juice can save the day — or night. But the same things that soothe and comfort might also bring about oral health problems later in life.

A significant concern to dentists is the practice of giving children juice or milk in a bottle or sippy cup to sip on throughout the day or at bedtime. Prolonged exposure to the sugars found in milk and juice contribute to tooth decay and a condition known as baby bottle tooth decay, a painful and damaging consequence for young children to endure.

February is National Children’s Oral Health Month

This is a great time to remind parents what they can do to prevent cavities. “Some people think it’s not a big deal for a young child to get a cavity or lose a baby tooth since these primary teeth eventually fall out anyway,” said Jerry Denning, DDS, dental consultant for Delta Dental of Arizona. “However, maintaining healthy baby teeth is extremely important for the long-term health of permanent teeth. When baby teeth are damaged by decay, it can affect nutrition, speech development and self-esteem, and can cause problems with spacing as permanent teeth grow in.”

According to Arizona’s Office of Oral Health, tooth decay is the most common childhood disorder affecting Arizona children, with 34% having some form of tooth decay by the age of three. Recent research demonstrates this burden is distributed unevenly, affecting more Arizona children from low-income families, children without dental insurance and children of important cultural groups such as Native Americans and Hispanics.

First Dental Visit by Age One

In order to combat and prevent dental decay, RaNee Toscano, R.D. H., and Acting Chief of the Arizona State Department of Health Services – Office of Oral Health stresses the importance of parents starting early, “Seeing a dentist by age one or when your child’s first tooth erupts is critical to their long-term health and well being.” Prevention is the key to maintaining healthy teeth. There are several things parents can do to protect their child’s primary teeth: Don’t put your child to sleep with a bottle or sippy cup. Maintain a balanced healthy diet low in sugary and starchy foods is important. Get fluoride varnish treatments if your child is at risk for decay or sealants once their molars erupt. Promote brushing twice a day and visit the dentist twice a year.

Prevention based strategies are the focus of the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation where grants are targeted to programs providing fluoride varnish treatments for young children at risk for cavities. School age children without dental insurance can receive dental screenings and sealants as part of school-based services. In the past ten years, the Foundation has given back more than $ 2 million to the community to combat oral disease in Arizona. Love Humanity Launches Common Sense Parenting

New Delhi, India (PRWEB) March 28, 2009 –

Love Humanity International (LHI) and Pentagon Press (PP) together launched the book, Common Sense Parenting, in English nationally and in Hindi nationally and internationally from Nehru Memorial Museum & Library – Teen Murti House on March 26th. Other CSP course materials in both languages were also launched by other distinguished guests.

Chief Guest, Mrs. Rajashree Birla, Director of Aditya Birla Group, launched the Hindi book ‘Lalan Palan Samanya Bodh’ authored by Ray Burke, Ph.D. and Ron Herron from the USA and translated to Hindi by Mr. Valji Bagda.

Birla said, “Common Sense Parenting comes at an opportune time. It is heartening to find that it relies heavily on emotional bonding between parents and children, on working with a warm heart, a cool head, a strong sense of values and a firm hand on discipline, which is defined as teaching. It is a blue print for parenting and cuts across cultures and geographies. The techniques, even as they are simple, contain much wisdom. I am sure following this book will help create for today’s children a better tomorrow, on a foundation of happy families.”

Louise Anita Williams, Founder and Managing Trustee of LHI, gave the history of CSP of how it was developed by Girls and Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska in the USA and spoke about the skills taught in the course patterned after the book.

The launch began with the reading by Mr. D. R. Kaarthikeyan of a message from Anandmurti Gurumaa where she said, “Every parent should be trained, well-equipped to live their life in a better and balanced manner. The mother has to learn to be a mother; the father has to learn to be a fatherBeing a parent can become wondrous, when you are already happy with yourself, when you are not seeking something from anyone, when you are fully settled in your own being or have begun your journey towards thatI sincerely hope that through the medium of Common Sense Parenting the above is achieved and an effort in this direction is initiated.”

President of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Panna Choudhury, while launching the CSP book in English emphasized that a parenting course is the need of the hour in India.

Dr. A.K. Gulati, a child specialist in New Delhi, launched the CSP training manual in English and then stated, “Parents generally do not spend more than 8 minutes at a time in a pediatrician’s office and 70% of the questions are related to parenting. Therefore this childcare course is a basic need for a family, resulting in a better society.”

Director of Pediatrics of Max Institute of Pediatrics, New Delhi, Dr. Anurag Krishna, launched the Hindi Training Manual ‘Lalan Palan Samaya Bodh’ and said, “Today I see a birth of a subspecialty in Pediatrics from this course. I take this opportunity for the Institute that I represent of getting into a partnership with LHI where we use this resource material to initiate the larger body of pediatricians to this subspecialty so that they become beacons for disseminating the message of parenting to their colleagues and also to enhance the virtues of parenting to the parents of their clients.”

The English training film was launched by, Dr. Jagannath Pati, Deputy Director, Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. He spoke saying, “I have gone through the course and we at CARA have seen children’s homes very closely and we find that this kind of course is needed and I am going to strongly recommend the book and course to our social workers and other stakeholders.”

Mr. Sonykutty George, Project Officer, Child Protection Section, UNICEF, launched the Hindi training film after which he said, “I am most concerned about what is happening to the children in India today and it is now time for a second freedom struggle. The values of non-violence and the values of assertive behavior can make tangible changes in the lives of childrenI now commit myself and UNICEF for the second struggle of freedom where children are free of fear from parents, teachers and childcare providers.”

At the end of launching the books and course materials, Mr. Valji Bagda, Trustee and Managing Director, LHI, was felicitated by Birla for his outstanding work in translating the book and other course materials.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) January 4, 2010

Laurie A. Couture, author of Instead of Medicating and Punishing, offers attachment-focused phone, email and face-to-face consultation for parents and professionals who work with children and families. Laurie works with parents and professionals to help them understand three key points:

Behavioral acting-out, emotional instability and problems with school performance are alarm signals that alert us that something is distressing and hurting the child.

Contrary to popular belief, it is natural for adolescents to stay emotionally close and connected to their parents.

Children of all ages from infancy through late adolescence need specific parenting and educational environments in order to feel happy, thrive, cooperate and reach their full potentials.

Laurie will guide parents and professionals to:

Discover principles to help parents heal their relationships with their children, regardless of their age,

Identify the surprising parenting and learning conditions that children’s brains need for mental, emotional and behavioral health and for optimal learning,

Understand why behavior modification, rewards and punishments, diagnoses and medication do not heal children or make them happy, cooperative, compassionate people,

Differentiate between the popular therapies and special education services that can actually worsen the behavior and distress of children and which treatments lead to lasting solutions, and

Learn respectful, refreshing, natural discipline principles that parents can apply to facilitate family closeness and cooperation, respectful communication and empathy for others.

ChildSharing.com Honors Military Families with a Discount Offer on all Online Parenting Classes

Carson City, NV (PRWEB) March 07, 2012

In appreciation of active and retired U.S. military personnels service to our country, ChildSharing.com offers a 50% discount to military personnel (active or retired), their spouses, and civilian military employees. Additionally, online parenting classes offered on federal holidays are free to military personnel.

Military divorce rate has reached its highest level since 1999, with nearly 30,000 marriages terminating in fiscal year 2011, according to a December 2011 Defense Department report. Massive troop withdrawals may ironically be to blame for the rising military divorce rate, along with the wear of repeated deployments that strain relationships and alter behavior. Spouses at home and spouses returning often must deal with each other for the first time in years. Returning veterans are susceptible to the stressors of life. They may have a difficult time working through marital challenges, and separation or divorce are increasingly seen as solutions.

Along with offering a significant discount to military personnel, to help reverse the statistics, ChildSharing.com is working with nonprofit agencies across the country to introduce or enhance online reunification programs. When our courageous men and women in all military branches come back from war, there are limited resources for themselves and their families. There are numerous issues that need to be tended in support programs that are not readily available. ChildSharing.com has had excellent success with online programs helping parents in transition across the country, therefor offering assistance to the military through an online medium, may offer great benefit.

“We are grateful to now have the opportunity to support the brave men and women who serve our country, and were proud of the opportunity to give back to veterans since they have given so much to us, said Lori LaVigne, Education Planner for ChildSharing.com. There is truly no way we can properly thank the members of the U.S. Armed Forces for all that they do to protect and serve our country and maintain our country’s freedom. This program is a small way we are able to show our respect and support to the soldiers that serve and to help their families by making life a bit easier for them.”

Founded in 2008,ChildSharing, Inc. is dedicated to better educating and supporting families. ChildSharing, Inc. works with experts across the country to educate families in transition.
