NorthStar Alarm Revitalizes Habitat for Humanity Neighborhood

NorthStar Alarm, a home security provider, teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Utah County Saturday to participate in a local revitalization project in the community.

Employees from the companys corporate office in Orem as well as employees from area offices including California, Texas, and Arizona showed up bright and early to work together on a much-needed service project in a Habitat for Humanity neighborhood.

The team of volunteers worked on everything from landscaping, weeding and clearing gravel to repairing a roof, installing a new fence and general clean up for the Habitat homes in the area.

NorthStar Alarm Director of Human Resources, Ashlyn Lewis, said, We were excited to have so many employees, many of whom traveled from out of state, show up and work hard on this community service project. It was a rewarding, team-building experience, and we are anxious to work with Habitat for Humanity again in the future.

The alarm company is also donating a home security system and covering the monitoring fees for one of the new homes being built in the same Provo neighborhood where the revitalization project took place. The Habitat for Humanity family moving into the new home has a six year old son with severe autism, and the alarm system will provide protection and emergency notifications for the family should the child attempt to leave or unknowingly put himself in harms way.

The groundbreaking for the aforementioned new Habitat home is scheduled for tomorrow, October 23, at 8:00 a.m. at 1042 North 950 West, Provo, after which the home NorthStar security system will be installed with 24-7 monitoring at no cost to the family.

NorthStar Alarm Goes One Day Without Shoes to Help Children

NorthStar Alarm goes one day without shoes for the second time to raise awareness for the millions of children that go without shoes daily. The campaign “One Day Without Shoes” is an annual event sponsored by TOMS Shoes. TOMS’ asks people to go without shoes for one day to experience what children all over the world experience every day.

This year the campaign is focused on education. Rally signs can be found posted all over, with sayings like, “when children are provided school uniforms and shoes, attendance can increase up to 62%.” Also, “children affected with hookworm earn up to 40% less in adulthood.”

TOMS’ business model is to give one pair of shoes to an impoverished child, for each pair of TOMS’ shoes that is purchased. Thus the phrase “One for One” is well known. They have given shoes to children in more than 40 countries. Since 2011, TOMS’ also saves some of that profit to help save or restore eyesight to people in those countries.

NorthStar Alarm wanted to support the cause for a second time. They participated last year, 2012, in the event as well. Employees were encouraged to go without wearing shoes for the entire day of April 16. NorthStar customers were also encouraged to go without their shoes, and both employees and customers were given the chance to win a TOMS gift card by posting a photo of their bare feet on NorthStar’s Facebook page.

About TOMS’ Shoes

In 2006 TOMS’ was founded by Blake Mycoskie. TOMS’ business model is to give one pair of shoes to a needy child for every pair of shoes that is sold. In 2011, TOMS’ introduced TOMS’ Eyewear. For each pair of sunglasses that is sold, some of that profit is put into a reserve to help restore and aid the eyesight of people in developing countries. While Mycoskie was in Argentina, he saw thousands of children running around without shoes. He learned about the lack of shoes for those children and soon discovered that it was an issue in other developing countries as well. The impact of being barefoot for those children was larger than Mycoskie expected, ranging from not being able to attend school to diseases. Northstar Alarm Provides a Home Security System at No Cost for a Family with Autistic Children

Last Wednesday, NorthStar Alarm had one of their technicians, Ryan Forbes, install a home security system for the Artanduaga Family at no cost. The family has three children, two of them have autism. The youngest child has severe autism and receives constant care.

The habitat for humanity home has been in construction since last year. Finishing the home is a great accomplishment for Habitat for Humanity, and a great blessing to the Artanduaga Family.

We are so happy to have a home for our family,” Rubeth Artanduaga said.

One of NorthStar Alarms core values is service. Service is embedded in each employee and NorthStar is always on the lookout for opportunities to give back. NorthStar has participated in past Habitat for Humanity projects, like a revitalization project. However, NorthStar wanted to take things up a notch and donate a security system to a family who really needs it.

We appreciate Northstar’s kind donation of a security system in the new Habitat home in Provo,” said Nancy Mickiewicz, Partnership Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity. “This generous donation will give the family peace of mind now and in the future.”

It took one hour to completely install the system. It is a wireless system with an easy-to-use touch screen panel. NorthStar is covering the monitoring for two years, after that the equipment will still be able to be armed and disarmed. The value of the system is around $ 2500.

Besides just the home security benefits, there is new technology in our systems that can be incredibly beneficial for parents that are simply trying to keep track and protect their children, said NorthStar Alarm CEO Jason Christensen. NorthStar is excited to be able to provide this benefit for the Artanduaga family. We hope that this can help this family as they continue to admirably deal with different life challenges.

The ribbon cutting for the home is tomorrow, July 2nd at 8:30 am.

NorthStar Alarm Provides a Home Security System for a Kids on the Move Family

Last week, NorthStar Alarm presented the Pittmans, the family of 2-year old Ryker Pittman who receives therapy through the Kids on the Move organization, with a home security system and monitoring package at no cost. The family was selected to receive the package after entering an essay contest that NorthStar Alarm and Kids on the Move held for over families involved in the Kids on the Move organization.

“We have thought about getting an alarm system or quite some time now and are grateful that NorthStar made it possible for us,” said Stacie Pittman, mother of Ryker Pittman. “We feel much safer about being in our home already.

The Pittman family is receiving a wireless home security system with an easy-to-use touch screen panel and mobile control allows the family to arm the system and receive text messages each time a door or window in the home is opened. NorthStar is also covering the monitoring of the system for two years, after that the equipment will still be able to be armed and disarmed. The system and monitoring together is valued at $ 2,500.

“We really appreciate this generous donation and the support that NorthStar has provided for our organization and community,” said Holly Bushnell, PR manager of the Kids on the Move organization.

Last week, NorthStar Alarm Services was announced as one of the prestigious companies to earn the title of “Best Companies to Work For” in the fall edition of the Utah Valley Business Q publication.
