Doe Run CEO Emphasizes Important Role Earth Science Plays in Natural Resources Industry

Neil was speaking July 26 to K-8 educators who traveled from across the state to attend the Missouri Minerals Education Foundation’s eighth annual workshop at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. In addition to stressing the importance of earth science, Neil emphasized Doe Run’s commitment to sharing its collective knowledge with teachers and students.

“There’s a need in this country for increased aptitude in the sciences, so I was honored to be invited by the foundation to speak with teachers who are making science come alive for Missouri students,” Neil said. “It’s vital to the future success of Doe Run to support events like this, which serve as valuable resources for educators who are preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

While earth science is essential for understanding how the world works, it’s certainly a subject that needs more attention, he explained to workshop participants.

Among 15-year-old students, the United States ranks 24th in science literacy, and the country ranks 20th in the number of 24-year-olds who earn degrees in natural science or engineering, according to a report published May 22, 2006, by the Congressional Research Service.

Furthermore, No Child Left Behind will expand next year to include science assessments, so teachers and administrators can get the data they need to help students improve science skills and better prepare for college and the work force.

During Neil’s workshop presentation, “Learning for a Lifetime,” he noted how Doe Run delivers information to students and teachers and actively communicates the importance of earth science, including a comprehensive Minerals Education program involving more than two dozen employees, regular educational tours and student-work programs.

“Teachers impart the knowledge and inspiration necessary to drive our future geologists, engineers, environmentalists and marketers,” Neil said. “Providing teachers and their students with hands-on learning experiences supports Doe Run’s commitment to a lifetime of learning and helps ensure a competitive work force.”

The annual Missouri Minerals Education Foundation workshop includes hands-on activities and presenters from the mining industry, government agencies and educational organizations. PCI Member to Testify Industry is Healthy, Well-Regulated


Washington, D.C. (Vocus) September 24, 2009

J. Douglas Robinson, chairman and CEO of Utica, N.Y.-based Utica National Insurance Group, a Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) member company, is scheduled to testify before the House Small Business Committee Wednesday to reiterate that home, auto and business insurers did not cause the current financial crisis, do not present systemic risk, and are already regulated effectively.

Robinson will tell the committee that these types of insurers are predominantly a Main Street industry that is already stable and competitive. He will ask legislators not to target new, consumer-costly regulations toward Main Street insurers such as his company–which insures schools, libraries, bakeries, child care centers, graphic arts businesses, small contractors, and funeral homes, among others.

“There is widespread recognition that home, auto and commercial insurers did not cause the financial crisis, are not systemically risky, and have strong and effective solvency and consumer protection regulation at the state level,” Robinson said. “Property-casualty insurers have not asked for government handouts, and our industry is stable and continuing to provide critical services to local economies and their communities.”

Robinson will urge the Obama Administration and Congress to target regulatory reforms toward where the problems occurred, rather than potentially creating fewer choices and greater costs for consumers by increasing bureaucratic requirements for systemically non-risky companies.

“PCI commends President Obama and Congress for working to ensure that the financial crisis we experienced last fall is never repeated,” Robinson said. “Achieving this goal requires a focus on fixing what went wrong with Wall Street, without imposing substantial new, ‘one-size-fits-all’ regulatory burdens on Main Street, small businesses and activities that are not highly leveraged or systemically risky.”

On June 23, 2011 the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB) issued its Federal Register Notice for defining “larger” non-depository industry participants. The Notice outlined the industries that the Bureau will immediately seek to regulate.

The newly created Consumer Protection Working Group of the federal Financial Fraud Enforcement Taskforce has stated that it will work across federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies, and with state and local partners, to strengthen efforts to address consumer issues, including schemes targeting vulnerable populations, such as the unemployed, those in need of payday loans, and those suffering from the burden of high credit card and other debt.

The Future of Deferred Enforcement of the Federal Trade Commissions Telemarketing Sales Rule

On October 17, 2010 the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) became effective thus regulating “debt relief services” which included individual or companies that negotiate or settle “tax debts owed to the government.”

The same day the TSR became effective, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a policy statement that it was unclear if tax debts are “unsecured” one of the triggering elements of the TSR.
