Girl Up Highlights the Importance of Counting Girls as World Population Grows to 7 Billion

Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 27, 2011

With the seventh billion child expected to be born this month, Girl Up is drawing attention to the need to count, advocate for and invest in girls worldwide. Investing in a girl today means in the future she will have the tools to reinvest back into her family and community, which helps build a better world for all of us.

Todays youth generation is the largest in history with more than 1.2 billion adolescents ages 10 to 19, half of whom are girls. As such a sizeable segment of the population, adolescent girls represent the worlds greatest source of untapped potential. Research shows that less than two cents of every development dollar goes toward adolescent girls, and according to the Population Council, in some cases 80-90% of youth program participants are boys.

With a growing population of adolescent girls among the worlds 7 billion people, it is more important than ever that we ensure all girls are provided with the tools, information and resources they need to bring about change, said Gina Reiss-Wilchins, Director of Girl Up. Counting girls in order to properly steer national and development resources can help prevent child marriage, afford girls access to education, provide them with health services and prepare them to be the next generation of future leaders.

Adolescent girls have tremendous potential, and we know the keys to unlocking that potential are access to quality education, health information and services, social and economic skills training, and violence prevention and protection services. Yet, because research rarely measures adolescent girls as a segment, they become invisible and our ability to meet their needs is jeopardized.

You can help make girls count by going to GirlUp.org.

Westminster Lawyers Releases New Infographic on Divorce Negotiations, Highlights Ways to Avoid Costly Litigation

Melbourne, VIC (PRWEB) January 08, 2013

Family law specialists, Westminster Lawyers, recognise the inherent difficulties that result from the breakdown of a marriage. The Melbourne-based family law firm works consistently to provide resolutions that are efficient and effective. In line with Westminster Lawyers tireless commitment to its clients, the family law firm recently unveiled a new infographic on divorce negotiations on its website. The illustrated information is aimed at guiding couples on the verge of or going through a divorce with a quick look at what their options will be when agreements are reached and when contentions arise.

Westminster Lawyers outline the stages of divorce negotiation with a few possible outcomes. Working on the scenario of agreements being reached between both parties, the Melbourne-based family law firm illustrates the benefits of drawing up a binding financial agreement. The legal document must explicitly state the division of properties between the two parties. The infographic declares that the court need not approve the binding financial agreement.

The premier law firm states at length, If no agreement can be reached on the division of property, an application can be made to have your matter heard at court. However, this process is both costly and time consuming. We will always try to resolve your matter by way of agreement and issue to court only as a last option. Mediation and collaborative family law procedures are often used to assist parties to reach financial settlements in a dignified and cost-effective manner. We regard court proceedings as a last option.

When both parties are unable to reach an agreement, the infographic reveals Westminster Lawyers will still work towards dispute resolution before heading to court. Once that stage of the negotiation fails to result in an outcome for the parties, the expert family law firm will then represent clients in proceedings, either in Family Court or Federal Magistrates Court.

Through the latest infographic, Westminster Lawyers hope to achieve a cost-effective way for divorcing Australian couples to reach settlements so that an expensive and potentially contentious litigation in court would be avoided. However, when both parties are unable to reach an agreement on certain issues such as child support or spousal support, Westminster Lawyers are more than capable and prepared to take on decisive action in court.

Westminster Lawyers provide a full range of services for couples who want to get married, who want to enter into a relationship, and those who are seeking resolutions to a relationship breakdown. The expert family law firm prepares agreements and brokers negotiations that are designed to protect the assets and interests of their clients. Apart from divorce, Westminster Lawyers can assist clients in applications to move children to live in another state or country and/or applications to have children returned to their original country of residence, superannuation issues, prenuptial and cohabitation agreements, wills and estate planning, and other issues that may require mediation or litigation.

Julian McDonald, one of Westminster Lawyers directors and accredited family law specialist and mediator, remarks, We recognise the emotional upheaval experienced by many people following the breakdown of a relationship. We strive to promote the interests of our clients during this challenging period.

To view the latest divorce negotiations infographic, go to the Westminster Lawyers website or contact the Westminster Lawyers for legal consultation on divorce and other issues concerning family law in Australia.

Life with Teens Magazine Highlights the Steps to Prevent Teen Concussions

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 31, 2013

TeenLife Media, a print and online media company that offers comprehensive information and resources for parents and teenagers features the article Getting A-Head of Concussions in the spring issue of Life with Teens magazine. It provides excellent tips for parents and teenagers on the preventative measures on and off of the field when engaging in sports.

“Spring is the perfect time for everyone to become more active, but also more safe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year. But many more get undetected or unreported. That’s why, we feel that it is so important to educate parents and teens today on what to look for if a head injury occurs,” states Marie Schwartz, Founder of TeenLife Media, LLC.

Experts say most youths do well after a sports-related concussionas long as they leave play immediately, seek medical care, and let their brains heal before returning to the field, rink, or court. Children who sustain repeat concussions are at risk for life-changing problems, including brain damage, even death.

Here are some steps parents and athletes can take to help prevent concussions while enjoying youth sports:

Play smart. Athletes should follow the coachs safety rules, practice good sportsmanship, and wear correct protective equipment (helmets, padding, etc.) that fits and is well maintained.

Get strong. There is evidence that neck and shoulder strengthening can help athletes stabilize their heads after an impact, notes William Meehan, M.D., director of the Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention and the Sports Concussion Clinic at Boston Childrens Hospital. He also recommends staying hyperaware (keep your head on a swivel) during play.

Study up. Know the signs and symptoms, which may not appear until hours or days after an injury. Remember that concussions rarely involve losing consciousness; even a ding to the head can be serious. Also, familiarize yourself with your school or league concussion policiesincluding whether they conduct preseason neurocognitive tests like ImPACT to measure an athletes memory, concentration, and reaction times.

See a doctor. If you suspect a concussion, get medical help right away. A primary care physician with experience managing head injuries is a good place to start, but see a specialist if symptoms worsen.

Be patient. Resting the body and brain after a concussion is critical. Students should not return to play or school until cleared by a medical professional. Recoverymeaning all symptoms are gone (both while resting and exercising) and balance and brain function are restoredtypically takes 7 to 10 days.

Communicate. Let coaches know if your teen has had previous head injuries in any sport. And if your child complains about concussion-type symptoms, take that seriously.

Research Highlights that 30% of the Toy Manufacturers and Distributors are Unsure of the Impacts of the Toy Safety Directive

Warrington, UK (PRWeb UK) April 23, 2010

Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services UK, one of the worlds leading Supply Chain Quality, Risk and Social Responsibility solution providers, has recently conducted research amongst its customer database (manufacturers, importers and distributors) to understand how they are managing the latest changes in toy regulations. The research, completed in December 2009, showed that more than 30% of the respondents were not totally sure of the impacts of the revised Toy Safety Directive on their business and operations.

The Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, which replaces the 20-year old 88/378/EEC Directive, will come into application on the 20th July 2011 (and on the 20th July 2013 for the section regulating the use of chemicals in toys). This updated regulation, applying to all toys manufactured and distributed within the European Union, implies a long series of changes for manufacturers and distributors including: the requirement to conduct a risk/hazard assessment, the obligation to provide an EC declaration of conformity, the ban of new compounds & substances and additional restrictions on toys sold with food.

Because toys are produced and traded months ahead of Christmas, manufacturers do not have so much time left to comply with the new Directive and it is therefore worrying to see that 30% of the toy professionals are not totally sure what to do in order to meet the terms of the new legislation. Complying with the Directive is mandatory and the consequences of distributing unsafe toys in the European market could result in very expensive product recalls, risks of liability, brand damage and loss of customers confidence.

To help manufacturers, importers and retailers understand and comply with the new Toy Safety Directive, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services has enhanced its global toy supply chain services which include: consultancy packages, product safety testing, safety/risk assessments, product design evaluations, production controls, factory assessments and documentation reviews.

Malcolm Horner, Technical Consultant at Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, comments: The research weve conducted amongst our customers shows that a substantial number of toy professionals are not yet comfortable with the revised Toy Safety Directive. This is not a real surprise knowing that the Directive brings a lot of crucial changes and, ultimately, many interpretational questions are being asked.

Bureau Veritas toy technical consultants are definitely well-placed to help manufacturers, importers and distributors deal with these regulatory changes and interpretational issues: we have experts sitting at the BSI Toy Safety Committee, CEN Toy Safety Committee and the UK and EU Notified bodies Group, giving us a unique insight into the hazards associated with a wide variety of toys and juvenile products, adds Malcolm.

More information on the Toy Safety Directive and its impact can be found on Bureau Veritas Consumer Product Services website: http://www.bvcps.co.uk/toysafety

Healthy Hearing Highlights Four Clinics Making Patient Care Priority

(PRWEB) July 17, 2013

Healthy Hearing is an informative website providing articles, news pieces, studies and an extensive directory of more than 4,700 independent hearing clinics complete with reviews from real patients.

This past spring, Healthy Hearing introduced hearing center interviews to deliver additional information on local clinicians and hearing healthcare professionals.

The following four centers were recently highlighted on Healthy Hearing. During an interview, these professionals displayed not only knowledge regarding the latest hearing care trends, but went above and beyond to demonstrate the kind of patient care that makes individuals feel like friends and family.

With two locations in New Jersey in Clifton and East Brunswick, Dr. Brady uses his dual certification in speech pathology and audiology to help diagnose and treat individuals with hearing loss and balance issues. “I am certified in speech pathology and audiology so when I see a child or a deaf person I can assess their communication skills, not just their hearing,” Dr. Brady said. For the last 30 years, Dr. Brady has worked to provide the community with hearing loss help under his own name, because he stands by the work he does.

Located in Carlisle, Penn., the MidState Ear, Nose & Throat Center is led by Bernadette Braze, board-certified otolaryngologist (ENT) and facial plastic surgeon, and Lynn Fickes, audiologist. Under the leadership of the two women, the staff at Midstate is proud to offer individuals hearing care on a personal level. Fickes believes getting to know her patients not only helps her do her job better, but also enjoys receiving feedback on how the latest hearing technology has impacted someones life.

For more than 25 years, South Miami Audiology has been offering the community of South Dade, Florida a warm and welcoming environment to receive hearing care. The office is headed by Cindy Simon and Andrea Pernick, and the duo offers full-service diagnostics, including vestibular and tinnitus testing. “Coming to our office, you are not a number for an individual by name. You are not a 15-minute appointment but you get full care and attention and all results are carefully checked,” said Simon. In addition to the patients they see day to day, Pernick and Simon also help musicians, night club workers and motorcycle riders find the proper hearing protection and care necessary for the loud environments theyre submersed in.

Established in 1987, Audiology Associates of North Florida has been serving the greater Tallahassee area with ear, nose and throat assistance for more than 20 years. With more than two decades of experience in the hearing clinic and working with the Deaf community, Lisa Myrick, Au.D. is proud of the service provided by the clinical team of Audiology Associates. Myrick said, “I enjoy working with individuals and their families in finding solutions and answers to those difficult communication problems. I find it challenging and rewarding to help families rediscover the art of communication. Hearing is about more than hearing sounds, it’s about hearing grandchildren’s whispers and funny stories around the dining room table.”

Hearing Center Interviews appear every Monday and can be found at http://www.healthyhearing.com/.

Child welfare data breach highlights the importance of secure data disposal, says PHS Datashred

Cardiff (PRWEB UK) 20 August 2013

It was reported last Tuesday in the Scotsman that confidential child welfare documents have been found in a skip at a refuse site in Dundee.

According to the article, the documents include the home addresses and medical details of social work service users, as well as other personal information about the health and care of the children.

The same article states that Aberdeen City Council has subsequently ordered an urgent investigation into the allegations, which if true would be considered a huge breach of the Data Protection Act.

Shredding company PHS Datashred believes that this incident highlights the importance of secure data disposal, as well as the need for confidential waste cabinets and bins.

Anthony Pearlgood, Managing Director of PHS Datashred, said: All businesses have a duty to prevent their information from being breached to protect the privacy of their employees, customers and suppliers.

However, social work records are particularly sensitive, and if these allegations turn out to be correct then Aberdeen City Council will be at risk of being fined by the Information Commissioners Office.

Luckily, the leak of important documentation can be avoided by investing in secure bins to keep confidential waste materials safe on your site, before they are destroyed by an approved shredding company.

PHS Datashred offers a range of confidential waste cabinets and bins for organisations to store redundant paperwork, ranging in size from 120 to 1100 litre wheelie bins, and smaller desk side containers.

All secure bins come with a lock and slot mechanism to ensure that there is no unauthorised access to the contents.

Anthony Pearlgood said: The child welfare document data breaches should be a wakeup call for other organisations, particularly those dealing with confidential information such as councils, healthcare centres and financial services.

The Information Commissioner’s Office is now able to fine businesses up to

Viral Video from The Canary Party Highlights the Failures Reported by Families of the U.S. Vaccine Injury Compensation Program to Perform its Intended Role

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 10, 2013

Why do 1 in 50 U.S. children have autism? Do vaccines cause autism? What is the VICP? How does the U.S. government really treat children injured by vaccines?

Those questions are answered in a compelling video from the Canary Party, a political group that stands up for victims of medical injury, environmental toxins and industrial foods. Though dozens of published studies show that vaccines are linked to autism, and tens of thousands of reports per year of post-vaccinal regression continue to roll in to the CDC, according to The Canary Party, the U.S. government and pharmaceutical companies routinely deny it and prevent vaccine injury victims from receiving treatment and justice.

The new video is narrated by actor/comedian/activist Rob Schneider, a parent concerned about government intrusion into families healthcare choices for their children, and the increasing reports of vaccine-injured children. When the SNL alum was approached about the project, he was eager to sign on, saying, This fight is like the Civil Rights fight. I only hope this is 1963… not 1953! Schneider does not have a vaccine injured child, but was disturbed by what he learned about the vaccine program while looking in to vaccinating his own baby, What upset me the most is the inequity in this system. Parents vaccinate their children after being told that it will keep their child healthy. Then when some suffer devastating disability instead, the system abandons them and sweeps the damage under the carpet. No one is accountable, these families are left devastated and its wrong.”

The video illustrates The Canary Party’s understanding of how the current autism epidemic is rooted in the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, which Congress passed to shield vaccine manufacturers from liability for injuries and deaths caused by vaccines. Reports of adverse reactions to the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP) vaccine had caused consumers to question its safety, and manufacturers lobbied for relief from potential lawsuits, said Ginger Taylor, Vice President of The Canary Party. With that financial obstacle removed, pharmaceutical companies then pushed government agencies to add more and more vaccines to the recommended childhood schedule.

Most vaccine consumers dont realize that if they suffer an adverse reaction from a shot, they have almost no legal recourse, said Taylor. About 80% of cases filed in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) are thrown out (1), and those admitted often are not settled for five to ten years while families suffer extreme hardship. Rulings can be capricious and the program is now little more than a kangaroo court.

Conflicts of interest are everywhere amongst agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services, said Mark Blaxill, Canary Party Chairman and intellectual property expert. DHHS not only promotes vaccines among states, they also promote state legislation to penalize non-vaccinators and remove vaccine exemptions. Worse, HHS owns patents on vaccines profiting on sales (2).

In the 27 years since VICP was created, Congress has never investigated the program to explore the possible negative health effects of giving 70+ vaccinations to a child, said Wayne Rohde, who has submitted dozens of FOIA requests to CDC on vaccine safety issues only to have them ignored. Currently 1 in 6 children receive special education (3) and HHS reports that 50% of children have a chronic medical condition such as asthma, allergies, diabetes or immune disorders (4).

We are thrilled that Rep. Darrell Issa will be holding a second round of vaccine hearings this fall in the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, to examine just what is happening in the VICP, said Canary Party President Jennifer Larson. We are eager for Congress and the American people to see just how far the program has strayed from what it was intended to be when Congress put it in place in the 1980s. It has failed families and become nothing more than a tool to protect vaccine makers and cover government malfeasance in the vaccine program, to the detriment of countless children.

The Canary Party hopes that the video will help people understand the true reasons why the vaccine debate on autism continues, and focus public and media attention on the upcoming Congressional Oversight Committee hearings in November 2013.
