Lloydspharmacy has revealed that a large number of young women who rely on the contraceptive pill to prevent unwanted pregnancies have risked unprotected sex simply because they were unable to get a repeat prescription.
New research by Lloydspharmacy shows that as many as one in four (25%) women aged between 18 and 24 years who take the pill (http://health.lloydspharmacy.com/womenshealthcontraception/contraceptivepills.php ) admit to having sex without contraception (http://onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/sexual_health/Oral-contraception/3-month-oral-contraception ) just because they ran out.
According to Lloydspharmacy 64 per cent of women aged between 18 and 24 take the pill, amounting to around 1.6 million people. But one in four of those – around 426,000 young women – are taking huge risks by having sexual intercourse between pill prescriptions.
Lloydspharmacy warns that young women in particular find it difficult to make an appointment with their GP to get repeat prescriptions (http://www.lloydspharmacy.com/wps/portal/prescriptions/expressrepeatprescriptions ). Its research shows that one in ten young women always find it hard to get a convenient appointment from their doctor in order to get a repeat prescription of the contraceptive pill. And more than one in three (40%) say they have run out of the pill because they did not have time or simply forgot to collect their prescription.
Experts at Lloydspharmacy are particularly concerned that such a high proportion of young women who do not collect their repeat prescription then go on to have sex without protection anyway.
Chris Frost, Head of Medicines at Lloydspharmacy, commented: “This is a worrying statistic. It’s interesting to see just how many young women will take such a huge risk because they have either forgotten to pick up a repeat prescription or have not had time to go to the doctors because of work or child pressures.”
The research comes as Lloydspharmacy launches an online service for women to have an online consultation and obtain prescriptions for the contraceptive pill via its online doctor (http://onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com ).
The service has been designed for women who have been taking the pill for some time and who require repeat prescriptions for the same pill they have been taking for a year or more.
Chris Frost added: “This online pharmacy (http://www.lloydspharmacy.com/ ) service supplied by Lloydspharmacy.com, has been designed to provide an easy way for women to obtain a repeat prescription of the contraceptive pill without having to make an appointment at the doctors.”

Safe Horizon: Safe Horizon touches the lives of over 350,000 victims of violence and moves them from crisis to confidence. As the largest provider of domestic violence programs in the country, Safe Horizon helps hundreds of thousands of domestic violence survivors each year by providing them with 24-hour crisis hotlines, safe shelter, clothing, food, transportation, mental health counseling, guidance through the court system, security through changing door locks, counseling on financial literacy, and resume building. The Law Firm of Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, P.C. conducted their ninth annual legal workshop for approximately 185 mental health professionals addressing WHAT EVERY MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CUSTODY & VISITATION AND IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES AFFECTING CHILDREN. The workshop aims to assist these professionals when counseling patients marital and family law issues. Many mental health professionals come year after year to these presentations and we appreciate their support. We were also pleased to see many new faces this year, as we reached a record high attendance. Each year, attendees have been able to receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the mental health professional organizations for their participation. Our workshops are held at the Port Washington Yacht Club.
This years presentation was about the process of reaching a custody and visitation agreement and also addressed the very important issue of bullying in the schools and on the Internet. Also discussed were mediation, litigation and collaborative law, and the pros and cons of each approach. Dealing with custody & visitation issues can be a very difficult process. The importance of good communication during this negotiation is critical, and we addressed how mental health professionals can help their patients deal with these challenges, including:
Managing anger to facilitate reaching agreements
Handling an impasse in negotiating an agreement, and finally
Proceeding with litigation when an agreement cannot be negotiated.
We examined an actual Custody and Visitation Stipulation, and reviewed the components of a comprehensive agreement that protects both the parents and children, starting with a summary of the types of custody (joint vs. sole custody). Special provisions to an agreement were discussed, including spheres of influence and delegation of decision-making responsibilities, religion, corporal punishment, relocation, and how unique circumstances, i.e., drug abuse, and same-sex relationships are dealt with in an agreement.
The important and current topic of bullying in the school and on the Internet was also addressed including its impact on the child and the family, and what legal recourse is available for victims of this abuse.
The workshop presenters were attorneys from our firm: Jerome Wisselman, Jacqueline Harounian, Lloyd Rosen, Eyal Talassazan and Lauren Chartan. We were pleased to have a guest speaker, Betty Gross, from CAPS (Child Abuse Prevention Services) who spoke about school bully prevention programs for children, parents and professionals.

First, how does Social Security protect you and your family? While working and paying Social Security taxes, three types of benefit are being accrued: retirement, disability and survivor’s benefits.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says that retirement benefits are the cornerstone of the Social Security program. Because women live longer and are not generally covered by employer retirement plans, they are typically more dependent on Social Security retirement benefits. Social Security benefits cannot be outlived, so they are available even after other sources of retirement income have be exhausted. Many individuals qualify for benefits based on their own work record, but if they are married, they may also qualify based on their spouse’s work record.
Individuals may suffer a serious illness or injury that prevents them from earning a living. If they qualify for Social Security based on their earnings record, they and their children may be able to collect disability benefits. Eligibility is very strict and the benefit is not substitute for disability insurance, but it can provide basic income protection. The disability must be expected to last longer than a year or result in death and meet other requirements to be eligible for benefits.
If an individual is eligible for Social Security at their death, the surviving spouse (or ex-spouse), their unmarried dependent children, or dependent parents may be eligible for benefits based on the deceased’s earnings record. A person may also be eligible for survivor benefits it they are at least 60 (50 if disabled) or any age if they are caring for a covered child who is younger than 16 or disabled.
Social Security benefits are earned by working and paying Social Security or self-employment taxes. Up to four credits can be earned per year. For 2013, one credit is earned for each $ 1,160 of wages or self-employment income. Qualifying for retirement benefits requires that at least 40 credits have been earned (10 years of work). However, you may also qualify for spousal benefits based on your spouse’s work history, or if the spousal benefit is greater than the benefit earned by the you.
For disability benefits, if disabled at age 31 or older at least 20 credits must have been earned in the 10 years prior to the disability. Different rules apply if younger than 31.
For survivor benefits for family members, the taxpayer must have earned up to 40 credits in ten years of working. There is a special rule for if only one and one-half years were worked prior to death, the benefits can be paid to children or the surviving spouse who is care for them.
Third, the amount of the retirement benefit is based on the number of years worked and the earnings during those years. The benefit is calculated based on the 35 highest years of earnings.
The benefit is also based on the age at which the benefit begins. For those born in 1943 or later, full retirement age ranges from 66 to 67. The benefit can be started as early as age 62, but the benefit will be reduced by 25% to 30% from the full retirement benefit. If the benefit is deferred from full retirement age it will increase by 8% per year until age 70.
Fourth, deciding when to begin receiving benefits is very important. Should it start early so the reduced benefit will be received for a longer period of time or delayed to increase the amount of the benefit. This is an individual decision that will be based on many factors including the other sources of retirement income, marital status, continuing to work, life expectancy and the tax picture.
