Edenvale Shoppes Enters Into Relationship with ICRA to Further the Efforts of Providing a Safe Internet Experience

Green Bay, WI (PRWEB) July 5, 2007

Edenvale Shoppes announced today that it has entered into a relationship with ICRA to further the efforts of providing a safe internet experience.

“In addition to current measures such as Hacker Safe and Yahoo Secure Shopping that provide shopping and viewing security and reliability for our customers, we feel that users of the internet need the ability to determine what they are exposed to,” said Jesse Akre, President of Edenvale Shoppes. “The ability to label a site’s content as safe for viewing — void of any solicitations or materials that are considered offensive or vulgar, we feel is key at driving the continuous evolution of a save internet experience for all users, minor and adult. Leading internet safety advocate sites such as Netsmartz.org endorse the ICRA as a must have for internet content measurement and exposure.”

Internet safety is a growing concern. Recently, The FBI listed their top tips for child and teen internet safety.

Children’s Social Network Provider Slams MySpace’s Efforts On Keeping Children Safe Online

London, UK (PRWEB) February 5, 2009

Intuitive Media, providers of safe social networks for children between the ages of 6 and 14, today slammed reports that MySpace and Facebook have any serious measures to keep children safe online.

In response to MySpace’s reports of purging 90,000 sex offenders from its social network, Robert Hart, CEO of UK-headquartered Intuitive Media said, “That it took them two years to purge known names of sexual offenders listed in the public domain is in itself outrageous, but more worrying is that those websites can simply not protect against the offenders that haven’t been caught yet trying to sexually solicit children whether on or offline. Many social websites make perfect breeding grounds for future offenders.”

He goes on to say, “If you have both children and adults on a networking website it is almost impossible to police their interaction. Almost all online social networks have no ability to authenticate age and rely on an applicant’s honesty. So it’s not possible for them to prevent someone aged 11 posing as 18, or an adult of 35 posing as a 13-year-old. Without identity verification no social network is safe for children.”

Another huge problem, as identified by the recent Internet safety task force created by 49 state attorney generals in the U.S. and similarly by government studies in the UK and Europe, is the threat posed by bullying online amongst children. Again, social networks are unable in most instances to monitor or action such behaviour unless reported. By then the damage is done.

“Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing on line. That is one protection. Schools also need to teach safe internet behaviour. But the real key to safe social networking for children lies with the provider of the service: with age identification and validation of its users along with well-thought out levels of mediation,” says Hart, whose own social networks, with over a million members, have foolproof age verification, child authentication, and both automated and live mediation on the networks.

Hart continues, “We are the only online safe haven for kids up to 14 where they can learn how to behave safely and respectfully online and when they later go off to the adult networks, they are much better equipped to look after themselves.”

WHO World Malaria Report Shows Aid Efforts Are Working

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 17, 2009

According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2009 released earlier this week, more than one third of affected countries included in the study have witnessed reduction in malaria cases by more than 50 percent between 2000 and 2008. The report, which compiles information gathered from malaria programs in 108 countries, highlights considerable progress in the fight against malaria since the turn of the decade.

These improvements are attributed to a vast increase in international funding for malaria efforts over the past four years, which more than doubled from $ 730 million to $ 1.7 billion. However, malaria advocates in Washington cautioned that unless funding continues to increase, programs will fall well short of 2010 targets for universal coverage with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in 2015. According to the Global Malaria Action Plan, $ 6.2 billion is needed in 2010 alone to fully fund the package of malaria interventions necessary to meet the Roll Back Malaria goals that will save the lives of mothers and children worldwide.

“Malaria is one of the best investments we have in global health,” said Rear Admiral Tim Ziemer, the U.S. Malaria Coordinator. “We must build on successes we have seen in places like Rwanda, Zambia and Zanzibar, where effective partnership and proven tools like insecticide-treated mosquito nets, spraying of homes with safe, effective insecticides and malaria diagnosis and treatment worked together to dramatically reduce deaths and illness. And as we continue to make progress in the fight against malaria, we make important gains toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals related to poverty reduction, child survival, maternal health and reducing malaria deaths.”

Bolstered by the new data from WHO, malaria advocates in the U.S. have requested that the U.S. government allocate $ 924 million for bilateral malaria funding; $ 200 million for research, development and technical assistance; and $ 1.75 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in appropriations for fiscal year 2011. Advocates also applauded the ongoing commitment of the Obama Administration and Congress to expand malaria programming, demonstrated by the recent approval of $ 585 million for bilateral assistance for malaria and an additional $ 1.05 billion in support of the Global Fund.

The United States remains a global leader in the fight against malaria. Last year alone, the President’s Malaria Initiative reached 32 million people with lifesaving prevention or treatment services, while direct funding from the U.S. has helped the Global Fund distribute 104 million ITNs to protect families and provide treatment to 74 million individuals suffering with malaria.

Abuja+12 Declaration Accelerates Efforts to Eliminate Pediatric HIV/AIDS in Africa

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) July 29, 2013

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) welcomes a new declaration to eliminate HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria by 2030. The pledge was announced at the Abuja+12 Special Summit on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, held by Heads of State and Governments of the African Union (AU) on July 15-17 in Abuja, Nigeria. This declaration confirms the AUs steadfast commitment to creating an AIDS-free generation in Africa.

The Special Summit of the African Union centered on the theme, Ownership, Accountability, and Sustainability of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Response in Africa: Past, Present, and the Future. The declaration, titled Abuja: Actions towards the Elimination of HIV and AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in Africa by 2030, was released immediately following the Special Summit. It includes a commitment to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, increase access to HIV care and treatment for children and adolescents, review laws to protect people living with HIV and reduce stigma, create HIV/AIDS prevention programs aimed at young women, and accelerate HIV/AIDS prevention programs.

We are at a critical point in fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa, particularly in our efforts to eliminate pediatric HIV, said Charles Lyons, president and chief executive offer at the Foundation. This latest declaration builds upon the great progress that has been made in recent years to end pediatric HIV. The ambitious goals set forth by the AU will help improve the health of people in Africa and yield economic and social progress, especially for women and children.

The AUs pledge comes on the heels of new, consolidated HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention guidelines, released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on June 30. In line with the AUs declaration, the WHOs guidelines call for expanded prevention and treatment efforts for millions of HIV-positive people in Africa, including providing lifelong access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to all HIV-positive pregnant and breastfeeding woman and providing ART for all HIV-positive children younger than five years of age.

The AUs declaration signals that African countries are ready to take more ownership of their public health initiatives, said Rhoda Igweta, senior public policy and advocacy officer at EGPAF. Combined with the new WHO guidelines, there is tremendous opportunity for African countries to become global leaders in the effort to achieve an AIDS-free generation. With the right resources in place, the AU should meet its goal to eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030.

EGPAF is currently one of the largest providers of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in sub-Saharan Africa, and a leader in the global movement to end pediatric HIV/AIDS. To date, EGPAF has provided PMTCT and other health services to nearly 16 million women and their babies and operates more than 5,500 sites in 15 countries worldwide. Still, more than 900 babies are born HIV-positive every day, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, 57 percent of HIV-positive eligible adults receive HIV treatment, but only 33 percent of eligible children living with HIV have access to the medicines they need.

About the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF):

EGPAF is a global leader in the fight against pediatric HIV/AIDS, and has reached more than 16 million women with services to prevent transmission of HIV to their babies. It currently works at more than 5,500 sites and in 15 countries to implement prevention, care, and treatment services; to further advance innovative research; and to execute global advocacy activities that bring dramatic change to the lives of millions of women, children, and families worldwide. As Nation Awaits Supreme Court Announcement on Prop 8, Social Service Agencies Partner with RaiseAChild.US, Redoubling Efforts to Recruit LGBT Foster Parents

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 04, 2012

As the country waits to hear whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the appeal of Perry v. Brown, the Ninth Circuit case overturning Proposition 8, LGBT people are building their families though fostering and adoption.

As the familiar playground song goes, First comes love, then comes marriage We all know whats next, right? asks Rich Valenza, founder and president of RaiseAChild.US a nonprofit organization that encourages the LGBT community to consider building families through fostering and adoption. The organization has partnered with child welfare agencies, such as Los Angeles Countys Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to recruit resource families for children in need.

This week alone, RaiseAChild.US recruitment events will book hundreds of LGBT prospective parents, inspiring them with panel discussions featuring LGBT foster parents and connecting them with agencies eager to work with them.

Sari Grant, DCFS Recruitment Administrator for foster care and adoption, is unequivocal. She says, We have had great success training people from the LGBT community and providing children with safe, secure and loving homes. This outreach campaign is a great way to spread the word.

Primetime entertainment is flooded with images of fictional gay parents, such as on The New Normal, Modern Family and GLEE, says John Ireland, RaiseAChild.US co-founder and media director. As the Supreme Court weighs in, the news is filled with our actual families. Its time we move on to the important work of living our lives fully and with purpose.

The issue is not, Do gays have the right to adopt? Rather, it is Do all children have the right to a safe and loving home? says RaiseAChild.US board member and marketing professional Chris Hershey. Hershey and her wife were the first lesbian couple to adopt a child in Los Angeles County in 1989. She adds, Lets not forget, the lack of homes for children in need is a national epidemic that we all must take responsibility for.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Administration for Children & Families, over 107,000 children in the foster care system are available to be adopted. There are 300,000 additional children in need of immediate foster placement. Certified families are in short supply.

Evening recruitment events will be held on Tuesday, December 4 at Hadid Gallery in West Hollywood and Thursday, December 6 at the New York Museum of Fire in New York City.

Since it was founded in 2011, RaiseAChild.US has organized media campaigns in Los Angeles, Orange County and the San Francisco Bay Area, engaging over 500 prospective parents. RaiseAChild.US is working closely with the Human Rights Campaign Foundations All Children – All Families (ACAF) initiative, which provides professional training and technical assistance to foster care and adoption agencies that want to welcome and support LGBT foster and adoptive parents. To date, ACAF includes over 60 participating agencies across the country and has awarded 27 seals of recognition.
