Lone Star Expeditions Celebrates Five Years of Helping Teens through Wilderness Therapy

Lone Star Expeditions, a licensed outdoor treatment program for troubled teens, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. Based in east Texas, the program offers students outdoor experiential therapy as they navigate through ropes courses, learn wilderness skills, and periodically return to a permanent base camp that allows the program’s licensed therapists a more effective means of assessment, intervention and aftercare.

Lone Star is often considered the alternative to boot camps. The program emphasizes keeping parents connected and involved through weekly telephone planning sessions with their child’s therapist, parent therapy and reading assignments, contact with their child through the exchange of letters, and progression through Lone Star’s four Family Expedition Phases that mirror their child’s progress. The program’s flexible length of stay allows students and families to fully prepare for the next step in the therapeutic process whether transitioning to a residential boarding school or returning home.

Making Medical History: Texas Fertility Center Celebrates First Birth in Central Texas from New Frozen Egg Technology

Assisted reproductive technology has allowed millions of people to create and expand their families. For years, Texas Fertility Center (TFC) has used frozen sperm and frozen embryos in combination with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to achieve high success rates. Recent advances in technology have now enabled TFC to add frozen eggs to its medical protocol. TFC is now proud to announce that it has helped an Austin couple welcome a second child through the use of frozen donor eggs.

When Ellen and Michael Navarre decide to start a family, they needed help. In 2007, the couple conceived their son Charlie via IVF. The Navarres were thrilled to become parents. We were so excited that we were able to successfully conceive Charlie, Ellen explained.

Dr. Kaylen Silverberg, Ellens physician, said that infertility treatments often give couples a real chance at having a family. With the options we have available, about 80 to 85 percent of our patients achieve their desired outcome.

A Different Approach

Once they were ready for another child, the process didnt go as smoothly. A frozen embryo cycle failed and, as Ellen was older, the Navarres discussed the possibility of using donor eggs. In their first attempt, Ellen used her sisters eggs, but that pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. At that point, Dr. Silverberg mentioned the option of using frozen donor eggs.

That loss was difficult, Ellen said. But we knew wanted another child. We wanted Charlie to have a sibling, so when the opportunity came along, we were excited to be able to pursue it.

A relatively new procedure, oocyte cryopreservation, or egg freezing, not only offers infertile couples another choice, but it also gives career women a chance to preserve their fertility for a later time and it helps cancer patients protect their abilities to start families after treatment.

Until recently, egg freezing wasnt really a choice for women, Dr. Silverberg explained. Eggs, the bodys largest cell, are comprised mainly of water and they have historically been very difficult to freeze successfully. Vitrification, or ultra-rapid freezing, has enabled us to help our patients have the families they desire by giving them another treatment option.

For the Navarres, using a frozen egg donor provided the chance they were looking for to welcome another child into their home. The six frozen eggs were fertilized in the laboratory, and two embryos were transferred to Ellens uterus, resulting in a healthy pregnancy.

Ellen says that once they conceived, the couple really forgot about the donor eggs and daughter Catherine Collins was born in May. The growing becomes part of you. We didnt even think about it not being my egg.

It is such a personal choice, but this process was such a blessing, says the proud mother of two. The ultimate goal was a beautiful baby and a sibling for Charlie. We couldnt love her anymore.

Benito Juarez Academy (CPS) in Chicago Celebrates Juarez Unido Renaissance Fair

The students and teachers enjoyed a celebration of the first day of Juarez Unido Day at Juarez Academy, a Chicago Public School. Encouraging students to join school clubs and expand their academic and professional visions. Balloons, music and food for everyone.

The first day of Juarez Unido Day is called the Renaissance. Juarez Unido Day is a homeroom day when school is scheduled for a half day schedule once a month. During the second part of the half day students work with their homeroom teachers on test preparation and other activities to give academic direction to the students. Homeroom, or Division as it is called in other CPS schools, is the class where enrollment and attendance are taken as well as the distributed of other pertinent material and information for the students. The time length of homeroom during regular schedule is approximately 15 minutes.

The school was decorated festively with ribbons and balloons all over the patio and cafeteria. There was free soda pop and food for the students outside on the patio. There was even a disc-jockey ready with good music to hear that all the students enjoyed. In the center of the cafeteria inside the building was a large cluster of tables with school clubs that students could join. The displays where beautifully set up and many student volunteers were available to help students decide what clubs were best suited to them. One of the purposes of the Renaissance Day is to encourage students to get involved in school activities and programs.

Juarez Academy is a High School that is part of the Chicago Public Schools. The school celebrates with pride the ethnic background of the Hispanic community. Not far from Jaurez Academy is the Mexican Museum of Fine Art which works closely with the school offering diverse programs for the students as well as a cultural out reach for the community.

There are approximately 1,600 students at Juarez most of which are of Hispanic heritage. The students are polite, courteous, and well mannered. Often you are offered food and drink by students at this event to make you feel part of the community. The spirits in the school runs high this time of year when students come back and see their friends and prepare to study.

Over the years Juarezs scholastic standing has been on the rise due to the vision of their Principal, Mr. Natividad Loredo. Together with his Assistant Principals: Dr. Carmen Cruz, Dr. Richard Gelb, and Mr. Juan Ocon, Juarez students are scoring higher on standard achievement tests, higher on grades, and higher on college entrance. Further, working with Mr. Manuel Medina, Officer of Languages and Culture of the Chicago Public Schools, the school has become a center for cultural events, social enrichment, and learning.
