The Arizona Foundation for Women Kicks Off 6th Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) March 13, 2008

The Arizona Foundation for Women (http://www.azfoundationforwomen.org) announced that the 2008 Walk to End Domestic Violence will be held on April 26, 2008 at Wesley Bolin Plaza in Phoenix. The Walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a 5K Run, followed by the 5K Walk and then a Kids Dash. The festivities will include a live performance from the Chris Parker Project, a Kids Zone with games and activities, sponsor booths with giveaways and a designated area where participants can learn about domestic violence shelters and programs in Maricopa County. The Home Team Sponsors (Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Arizona Coyotes) will be participating in interactive areas hosted by players and mascots.

The 2008 Walk to End Domestic Violence will raise much-needed funds to support domestic violence shelters and programs in Maricopa County that provide full-service support to women and children as they flee violent situations. The Walk is also designed to increase awareness of this devastating problem as domestic violence incidences are increasing and public supported fundraising is more critical than ever. Funds are raised through registration fees and pledges collected by participants. All event costs are underwritten by corporate sponsors, therefore 100 percent of the pledges and registration fees directly benefit the shelters looking to end domestic violence.

“We are honored to host the Walk and to continue the good work that The Arizona Republic and 12 News started,” states Nancy Dean, CEO of the Arizona Foundation for Women. “The funds raised from the Walk have helped thousands of lives and the event draws attention to one of Arizona’s most critical social issues. We challenge our community to join with us in taking a stand against domestic violence. This abuse is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it — we must have a unified voice.”

All community members are welcome to join the 5K Walk or Run. Participants include the Honorary Chair, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, city officials, teams from local corporations, domestic violence shelters, victims of abuse and community members who want to show their support for the issue.

The Walk to End Domestic Violence aims to raise $ 400,000 and gain participation from a minimum of 4,000 walkers and runners with a minimum of 146 teams.

Georgia’s Attorney General Thurbert Baker Receives First Annual Barack Obama Political Leadership Award From The National Bar Association

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 14, 2009

The National Bar Association (NBA) presented Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker with its first annual Barack Obama Political Leadership Award at its 84th annual meeting in San Diego, California on Friday. The award recognizes Baker’s pioneering achievements as a public servant and elected official.

Baker, a Democrat from Stone Mountain, is Georgia’s first African-American Attorney General, having served in the office since 1997. During this time, he has been the only elected African-American Attorney General in the nation. He is also the only African American to be elected by his colleagues to serve as the president of the 102 year old National Association of Attorneys General.

As Attorney General, Baker has successfully managed the state’s legal affairs for more than two decades. He has always made protecting families and children a top priority. He promoted tough new laws against sexual predators who target children via the Internet, and has aggressively worked with local prosecutors and police to bring those who target children online to justice. Baker has also been a leading voice against domestic violence. He fought to make it a crime to commit an act of domestic violence in the presence of a child and he’s worked with local law enforcement to fight family violence.

Prior to his service as Attorney General, Baker served for five terms in the Georgia House of Representatives, including several years as the Floor Leader for then-Governor Zell Miller. As Floor Leader, Baker led the fight to pass some of the most significant legislation in modern Georgia history, including the institution of the state lottery and the lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship program.

He was the lead sponsor of the largest tax cut in Georgia history -the removal of the state sales tax on groceries. He also led the fight to pass tough new laws against drunk driving, strengthening the state’s notoriously weak, outdated drunk driving laws, and helped bring Georgia to the forefront in the battle against DUI.

“I am humbled and honored to be the first person to receive the National Bar Association’s Barack Obama Award. I hope to live up to the honor by continuing to bring people together to solve the tough problems facing Georgia,” said Attorney General Baker.

The National Bar Association (NBA) was founded in 1925, and is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of predominately African-American lawyers and judges. It has 84 affiliate chapters throughout the United States and affiliations in Canada, the United Kingdom, Africa and the Caribbean. It represents a professional network of over 20,000 lawyers, judges, educators and law students. The objectives of the NBA are “to advance the science of jurisprudence; improve the administration of justice; preserve the independence of the judiciary and to uphold the honor and integrity of the legal profession; to promote professional and social intercourse among the members of the American and the international bars; to promote legislation that will improve the economic condition of all American citizens, regardless of race, sex or creed in their efforts to secure a free and untrammeled use of the franchise guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States; and to protect the civil and political rights of the citizens and residents of the United States.”

Warrior Custom Golf Teams up with The Arcadia Firefighters in Support of the 12th Annual Diamond Bar Chapter of the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation Charity Golf Tournament

Irvine, CA (Vocus) August 28, 2009

Warrior Custom Golf is proud to support this years 12th Annual Diamond Bar Chapter of the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation Charity Golf tournament at the Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas, California. The event is held in memory of Alisa Ann Ruch who was fatally injured at age eight in a backyard barbecue accident and to raise funds for the AARBF which was established after her death to prevent burn injuries and provide services to burn survivors.

AARBF supports the fire service and medical community to prevent burns and strives to address the needs of burn survivors throughout all the stages of recovery. AARBF’s staff and volunteers work closely with the community to host prevention programs, raise funds and provide services to burn survivors.

There will be several Arcadia Firefighters and local businesses in attendance, to support the continuing efforts of the AARBF, who provide a supportive atmosphere for children who have suffered burn injuries by sending them to their annual Champ Camp. Champ Camp is a week-long summer camp that gives a child the opportunity to meet others who have gone through a similar experience and to realize they are not alone with their injuries. It spotlights a person’s ”inner beauty” and teaches them not to focus on the burn scars that they have to continually live with.

100% of the proceeds from this event will go directly to Champ Camp which is available to all young burn survivors in California ages 5-16 with a special Counselor-in-Training program for survivors ages 17-20.

Here’s how the AARBF impacted one childs life:

Going back to school after a burn injury can be scary. Alyssa Mercado a 6 year old child burn survivor experienced the fear first hand. According to Alyssa’s mother, Fermina Mercado, when Alyssa returned to school the children in Alyssa’s class were not very nice to her. They stared, asked impolite questions, and others did not want to play with Alyssa during recess.

Alyssa was connected to AARBF through Shriner’s Hostpital and hoped for some kind of relief when she returned to school. AARBF went to Richard Riordan Elementary to complete a ”Back to School” presentation with Alyssa’s class.

After the presentation Alyssa’s entire school experience changed. Fermina Mercado, Alyssa’s mother stated ”Alyssa is very happy to go to school each morning, and wakes up extra early and excited.” Fermina further explained that the positive attitude comes from the new friends that Alyssa is making at school; thanks to the ”Back to School” presentation, put on by the Alisa Ruch Burn Foundation. ”The Back to School presentation works, because it helped Alyssa want to be at school. She is very happy,” says her mother.

About the Alisa Ruch Burn Foundation

The Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation (AARBF) is a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing burns and fires and providing services to those who have been affected by a burn injury. Energy-Efficient Schools Initiative Feature Commitment at Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting

New York, NY (Vocus) September 21, 2010

The nations largest conservation organization has joined forces with sustainable green building products company Serious Materials and Jayni Chase, Green Community Schools founder and author. The Commitment to Action developed by these three entities will be featured Tuesday at the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Serious Materials, and Jayni Chase have committed to creating and supporting a coalition of manufacturers, installers, unions and others to launch a comprehensive environmental and energy-efficient experiential education model in 500 schools by year-end 2012.

The resulting Energy-Efficient Schools Initiative is a comprehensive strategy to reduce barriers for implementing energy efficiency in Americas schools. The solution is through building retrofits and hands-on application of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by students. Students will produce energy models, decide on alternatives and savings, learn about conservation and efficient technologies, and develop skills to meet the needs of the emerging clean energy economy.

The Energy Efficient Schools Initiative collaboration embodies the mission of National Wildlife Federation, which works to ensure a healthy planetabundant with wildlife and the natural resources on which all life depends. To achieve a sustainable world, we must deploy conservation practices and environmental education simultaneously. Helping young people think critically about energy sources, consumption and how to work together to solve problems is absolutely necessary, said Larry Schweiger, President & CEO of National Wildlife Federation.

This Energy-Efficient Schools Initiative commitment addresses three problems:

-Climate change and carbon-based energy consumption

-Declining STEM education in American schools

-Declining human capital and locus of controlan individuals desire to make a difference and

feel that their actions matter.

Improving education is a national priority that needs to be tackled with attention paid to developing the economy as a whole. The ultimate goal is preparing our nation’s children to be more confident and successful adults. At the same time, our joint expertise will bring together suppliers, service providers, construction workers and others to build a more sustainable economic future, said Kevin Surace, CEO of Serious Materials. Serious Materials is the leading provider of high-tech products and services that reduce energy usage in the built environment, the largest contributor of CO2 worldwide.

President Barack Obamas administration deems bettering education a national priority that needs to be tackled with attention paid to developing the clean energy economy as a whole. Our nations economic competitiveness and the path to the American Dream depend on providing every child with an education that will enable them to succeed in a global economy that is predicated on knowledge and innovation, according to the White House education landing page.

Talk about a good investmentthe more we invest in our schools, the bigger returns we will reap on every level. Schools are the hearts of our communities, our future depends on how much we choose to nurture or ignore our children. By investing our dollars and ourselves in our schools today, we will make improvements in the lives of Americas children. The benefits of the Energy-Efficient Schools Initiative will help kids bodies and brains in ways that will pay-off for the rest of their lives, said Jayni Chase, Founder, Center for Environmental Education, who brings decades of leadership in environmental education and sustainable school programs.

Stop Cyberbullying and Internet Predators with PC Pandora Monitoring Software During the 7th Annual Cyber Security Awareness Month

Las Vegas, NV (Vocus) October 12, 2010

This October marks the 7th annual Cyber Security Awareness Month, as declared by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA). Pandora Corp., maker of PC Pandora 6.1 computer monitoring software, is reminding parents that part of keeping the family safe online is knowing what the younger surfers are doing while connected to the internet.

Every family needs to take protective measures to avoid falling victim to identity theft, phishing scams and cyber attacks, says Jamie Leasure, co-founder of Pandora Corp. But these practices need to continue year-round, as does monitoring how your children are using the Internet.

Two key issues cyberbullying and Internet predators grab most of the headlines when it comes to child Internet safety. Leasure says being aware of how our kids represent themselves online, how they treat others, and who their friends are can help reduce dangerous and disastrous incidents.

The key is parental awareness, he says. When you know for sure what your kids are doing on the Internet, you have a much better chance of keeping them safe.

In the year since the last Cyber Security Awareness Month, the country has been shocked by a rash of teenage suicides, all pointing to endless, fierce cyberbullying as the driving force and reason for the act.

Phoebe Prince, Alexis Pilkington and Tyler Clementi are just some of the names we have seen and read about, all resulting in a tragic loss that could have been prevented, says Leasure.

Leasure says cyberbullying is here to stay until parents of the bullies take action.

Cyberbullying thrives on anonymity, he explains. Not only are the bullies anonymous online, but they are working in secret in their own homes. Cyberbullying wont stop until that parents of the bullies are aware of what their children are doing online, and care enough to step in and stop it.

PC Pandora monitoring software will let parents know if their child is acting as an aggressor to a peer or fellow student, or enabling the bullying by passing the information along.

While cynics and experts dismiss Internet predators as overhyped media sensationalism, stories continue to surface every week of predators arrested in law enforcement sting operations and caught with real teens. One of the most recent stories that deserves special attention is the Kid-nap/ rape hoax in San Diego.

According to ABC News, a 20-year-old man in southern California befriended a 15-year-old girl online through the website, Mocospace. The two carried out a relationship that eventually lead to consensual sex. The girl felt guilty and decided to create an elaborate kidnapping and assault story to cover her actions.

The main message here is that talking just isnt enough, explains Leasure. The girl admits her parents had talked to her about the dangers online, but she disregarded their warnings, took things dangerously too far, felt guilty, and then made things worse by creating a horrible lie. As shocking as it is, taking risks like this and not listening to mom and dad is completely normal teen behavior. Thats why in the digital age, talking isnt enough; monitoring Internet activity could have helped prevent this unfortunate event.

PC Pandora 6.0 is computer monitoring software that records all user activity through sequential screen snapshots, allowing parents to visually see everything their kids are doing online. The program also records activity in text-based files that capture all emails sent and received, instant messenger conversations, websites visited, programs accessed, peer-to-peer files shared, keystrokes logged, Internet search queries, printer logs, and more.

For parents that have to work and cant be home right after school, PC Pandora comes equipped with the IRIS feature, which sends the recorded text-based files to a parents email at specified intervals. McCarter Attorney Receives New Jersey State Bar Associations Annual Distinguished Legislative Service Award

Newark, NJ (PRWEB) December 10, 2010

McCarter & English is pleased to announce that the New Jersey State Bar Association has awarded attorney Michael P. Pasquale with the 2010 “Annual Distinguished Legislative Services Award” for his work in drafting and advancing bill S-1963/A-3096. The bill revises the Family Law Act in New Jersey with respect to military child custody issues. As Chairman of the NJSBA Military Law Section, Mr. Pasquale was charged with the responsibility to have the law vetted from a military perspective by the Section, garner State Bar support and approval, as well as legislative approval. Approval of the bill will align the State with existing federal law under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCPA).

The award will be presented today at NJSBAs Board of Trustees holiday luncheon. Attorneys Patricia Apy, Tim McGoughran and Stuart Pachman will also be recognized.

I am truly honored to be presented with this award, said Mr. Pasquale, who is a member of the firm’s Business & Financial Litigation Group. I also must thank Patricia for bringing me on board with this project. Her vision and determination has been the foundation for our work, which I believe to be the most important project that the NJSBA Military Law Section has pushed forward. It is another vital tool to address the various challenges facing soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. These changes we propose are in the best interests of the parents and, most importantly, the children.

Thousands of servicemembers nationwide must place their children with temporary custodial figures when deployed. This bill will allow them to maintain their primary custodial rights and avoid contested family litigation once theyve returned home. New Jersey will be joining 40 other states that have approved similar amendments, if the bill is passed.

Specifically, the bill ensures that 1) no permanent orders can be entered to change custody in the deployed servicemember’s absence, 2) time spent deployed is never a reason in and of itself to take away custody of a servicemembers child, and 3) the non-custodial parent, and not the servicemember, has the burden of filing an application to change custody upon the servicemembers return. This last measure serves to shift the burden of hiring an attorney from the returning soldier.

“The NJSBA is committed to advancing this legislation which we believe will balance the interests of New Jersey children in having a secure and stable environment against the need for soldiers defending our country to participate in training and multiple deployments,” said Susan A. Feeney, a partner at McCarter and President-Elect of the NJSBA. “I congratulate Mike, Patricia and the rest of the team on a job well done.”

“With more than 9,000 servicemembers from New Jersey, this legislation has the opportunity to provide comfort to many families within our State,” said William S. Greenberg, a partner at McCarter who established NJSBA’s Military Legal Assistance Program which helps New Jersey’s military reservists gain the services and benefits to which they are entitled. “I commend Mike for the work that he has done to help support the families of the brave men and women protecting us.”

The Legislative Services Award is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon members of NJSBA. Its purpose is to highlight those who have diligently worked to further advance the Associations legislative efforts.

The bill is expected to be voted on by the State in the first quarter of 2011.
